Wei Yumeng was still hesitant, not daring to make any rash decisions for fear of harming the child in her womb with a single misstep.
Zhan Mohan’s patience with her had reached its limit.
“Or you could stay out for a few more days and see if the Xin family will let you be.”
Wei Yumeng’s heart grew anxious at Zhan Mohan’s words, and she shook her head repeatedly.
“No need.”
She didn’t want her unborn child to face danger alongside her.
A hint of a smile finally surfaced on Zhan Mohan’s grim face. “I’ll give you one day to pack your things. Tomorrow morning, I’ll have Fang Xun come pick you up.”
“But what about Wen Yulan…”
“I will handle it. You just need to do your part.”
Zhan Mohan was always decisive and resolute in his actions. When he said something, it was as good as done, a fact Wei Yumeng had no reason to doubt.
“Then I’ll tell Lin Jing. I’ve stayed with her for so long, I don’t know if she’ll be unhappy about me leaving so suddenly.”
Wei Yumeng felt a pang of guilt saying this.
“As I just said, I’ve already informed her about a salary increase. She’ll likely be too busy to even pay attention to you then.”
Hearing this, a flicker of surprise and belated realization crossed Wei Yumeng’s mind.
“So, you had this all planned out from the moment I arrived, wanting me to go back with you, right?”
Zhan Mohan raised an eyebrow. “You’re not entirely hopeless.”
Wei Yumeng felt a chill run down her spine. This man was simply too formidable. Every step he took was calculated with absolute precision, leaving no room for error.
If she were to try and outsmart him, she feared she would be no match, her intentions seen through at a glance.
She couldn't quite place her feelings, a sense of unease lingering, as if she had been manipulated. Yet, even arguing with Zhan Mohan wouldn’t likely yield a victory, as Chu Zi’an’s experience had shown; he had stormed off in anger.
She wondered if Dr. Yang had managed to comfort Chu Zi’an.
Yang Tao had chased after him, and Chu Zi’an sat sulking in his car, repeatedly hitting the steering wheel. Yang Tao slid into the passenger seat, observing his furious expression.
“I’ve never seen you so angry. Is it because of Zhan Mohan, or because he can treat Wei Yumeng that way, while you cannot?”
Yang Tao saw right through his thoughts.
Chu Zi’an glanced at Yang Tao. “Since you know, why ask?”
Yang Tao managed a wry smile. “Chu Zi’an, as the young master of the illustrious Chu family, must you fall for a married woman who is carrying another man’s child?”
She had always thought his reluctance to date in recent years stemmed from some other reason, but it turned out there was no reason, he simply hadn’t met the right person.
It was because she wasn't the one he longed for that he had always shown no romantic interest in her, treating her purely as a friend.
Even this meal was only possible because of Wei Yumeng; otherwise, he would have found various excuses, like being busy with work or overtime.
Chu Zi’an was also frustrated. It wasn’t just about Wei Yumeng, but also Zhan Mohan. This matter had weighed on him for a long time, and he felt deeply ashamed, so he had never spoken of it.
Yet today, he suddenly felt the urge to confide in someone.
“Yang Tao, I’ll only tell you, and you can’t tell anyone else.”
Yang Tao patted his shoulder. “When have I ever not kept your secrets?”
Chu Zi’an smiled to himself. “Yes, among all my friends, I like you the most. Whatever help I ask of you, you’ll always help me without hesitation.”
“Actually… I’m quite afraid of Zhan Mohan. In front of him, I always feel inferior. Perhaps it’s because since childhood, our grandfather always compared me to Zhan Mohan, and he truly is excellent.”
Over time, he developed a sense of inferiority and apprehension.
Yang Tao understood his feelings, but she didn’t think it was necessary.
“You have your strengths, and he has his. There’s no need to compare them.”
No matter how outstanding others were, they wouldn’t be spending their lives with you. If insignificant people could affect your emotions, then your entire life would be lived for others, which was truly pointless.
Chu Zi’an asked her, “Could it be that you still think I’m quite outstanding?”
“I don’t know what you are in others’ eyes, but in mine, you are excellent.”
Yang Tao answered earnestly, her gaze sincere.
Seeing her serious demeanor, Chu Zi’an suddenly felt like laughing again.
“Alright, alright, I’m just telling you. It’s fine. Like you said, I’m not going to spend my life with Zhan Mohan. As long as I hide it deep enough, I’m not afraid he’ll see through me.”
Yang Tao gave him a thumbs-up. “Very good. But it’s best if you stop contacting Wei Yumeng too much.”
Chu Zi’an was confused. “Why?”
“Don’t you see that Zhan Mohan is determined to have her? I saw a very strong sense of possessiveness in that man’s eyes.”
He wouldn’t let this woman go easily.
Chu Zi’an was also a stubborn person. “So what? Can he really tie her to his side?”
“Does he need to tie her? Can’t you see Wei Yumeng likes him too? The only thing causing a rift between them now is the child in her womb. Once this child’s situation is clarified, their relationship will quickly mend. I just don’t want you to waste your efforts on something futile.”
As the saying goes, the bystander sees clearly. Chu Zi’an, being caught up in the situation, naturally couldn't see clearly.
“Got it, got it. You’re becoming more and more talkative.”
“I’m doing this for your own good.”
“Okay, okay, I know. Let’s go for a drink or two.”
Chu Zi’an drove off in another direction, feeling uncomfortable whenever he was in Zhan Mohan’s vicinity.
Later, Yang Tao sent Wei Yumeng a message, assuring her that everything was fine and they shouldn’t worry.
Wei Yumeng received the message as she was on her way back home with Mu Linjing.
Mu Linjing couldn’t help but express her concern when Wei Yumeng mentioned returning to the Zhan family.
“Yumeng, are you really going back to the Zhan family? What if they want to harm you?”
“As long as Zhan Mohan doesn’t harm me.”
She didn’t care about anyone else. But if, in the end, this was all his elaborate scheme, she felt she would collapse.
Others could hurt her, but he couldn't.
Since things had reached this point, Mu Linjing had nothing more to say. Since the decision had been made, any further words would be futile.
“If anything happens, call me. My door is always open for you.”
Wei Yumeng was deeply moved. She hugged Mu Linjing tightly.
“Thank you so much, Linjing. If my child is born safely, you will be their godmother.”
Mu Linjing smiled brightly. “That would be the best! I love children so much.”
The next day, Wei Yumeng packed her belongings. Fang Xun was already waiting at the door. Returning to the Zhan family, carrying a child, she didn’t know what awaited her.
