Chapter 13 Missing Out on Projects Worth Hundreds of Millions

"Who are you, and why are you uninvited to my home?" Yin Fang asked the newcomer.

"I am Zhan Zong's assistant, Fang Xun," the man introduced himself. "Zhan Zong sent me to pick up his wife."

Wei Yumeng was bewildered. Zhan Mohan didn't even know she was at the Wei family's place, so how could he have kindly sent Fang Xun to pick her up? What was going on?

Yin Fang and Wei Anguo exchanged a shocked glance. They hadn't expected this girl to be telling the truth.

No matter what, Wei Anguo dared not openly displease Zhan Mohan. He could only step forward with a fawning smile, while quickly signaling for the servants to release Wei Yumeng.

"Assistant Fang, did Zhan Zong send you to pick up Yumeng? We were just about to send her back."

Wei Yumeng shivered. Hearing Wei Anguo's hypocritical words made her feel truly disgusted.

Fang Xun looked at Wei Yumeng and said respectfully, "Since Madam is finished, please come back with me. Don't keep Zhan Zong waiting."

Wei Yumeng knew she wouldn't be able to bring Gu Shuyi out today. However, before leaving, she still reminded Wei Anguo.

"If my mother loses even a single strand of hair, I will make your entire Wei family pay with their lives!"

Once in the car, Wei Yumeng asked Fang Xun, "Did Mr. Zhan really send you to pick me up?"

Fang Xun simply replied, "Since Madam is out now, there's no need to dwell too much on other matters."

Wei Yumeng knew Fang Xun was tight-lipped and wouldn't tell her the truth.

She got out of the car and was about to walk inside when her phone rang.

"Hello, who is this?"

"Sweetheart, shouldn't you be thanking me for today's events? If it weren't for me, you might have really been locked up by the Wei family for a few days."

A familiar, deep voice, laced with a hint of devilish charm, entered her ears. Her heart gave a violent jolt. She cautiously looked around but saw no one.

Yet, the man's voice always gave her a false impression, as if her every move was being monitored.

She couldn't suppress her shock and asked with a frown, "Did you send Fang Xun?"

But Fang Xun was someone close to Zhan Mohan. Why would he obey him?

"It's not important whether I sent Fang Xun or not. What matters is how you're going to thank me."

His deep, resonant voice made Wei Yumeng even more anxious. She was always in the open, while that man was always in the shadows. No matter what she did, he knew it all.

She lowered her voice and angrily demanded, "What do you want? If you have something to say, let's talk face to face. Stop toying with me like this, please!"

No one knew how suppressed she felt right now.

In the quiet night, she didn't even dare to cry, for fear of arousing Zhan Mohan's suspicion.

"I helped you, and this is the attitude you show me? Do you only feel happy when I throw you to the Wei family to do as they please?"

The man gritted his teeth, his voice carrying a chilling coldness that sent a shiver down Wei Yumeng's spine.

"I don't need your help! I just hope you'll stay out of my life!"

Wei Yumeng angrily hung up the phone, her breathing somewhat uneven. She had desperately tried to unravel the mystery, but now she felt like she had walked into a dead end.

Why did Fang Xun refuse to mention it? Did they know each other? And what did Yin Fang mean by what she said at the Wei family's place? What were they hiding?

Before she could sort out her thoughts, she heard a sharp voice.

"Wei Yumeng, what are you still standing at the doorway for? Are you a doorman?"

Zhan Mohan's mother, Wen Yulan, emerged from the living room, her tone sarcastic. If it weren't for the old man insisting she marry into the family, she wouldn't have even been allowed to step foot in the Zhan family's door.

Wei Yumeng came back to her senses. As she passed Wen Yulan, the latter couldn't help but glare at her fiercely.

"Don't think that just because you married into the Zhan family, you're now a young mistress. I warn you, don't go running around causing trouble, or I'll deal with you!"

"I just went home to see my mother. I won't cause any trouble for the Zhan family, so you don't need to be so nervous."

She had married Zhan Mohan, but that didn't mean she had no freedom at all.

Hearing her talk back, Wen Yulan became even more displeased.

"Just because you're from a humble background, you dare to talk back to me? I can't stand the sight of you. What are you standing there for? Get out of my sight!"

Wei Yumeng didn't bother arguing with her. Wen Yulan was just spewing insults. The matter of Gu Shuyi was the one truly troubling her.

Back in the room, Zhan Mohan was sitting by the floor-to-ceiling window. His features were handsome, his nose high and straight, his dark eyes like black jade, gleaming brightly. His lips were somewhat thin, and his chiseled facial lines were perfect, like an artwork meticulously crafted by God, flawless.

She walked up to him and noticed the coffee in his cup had gone cold. As she reached out to change it for him, he suddenly grabbed her wrist and pulled her into his embrace.

A flash of panic crossed Wei Yumeng's eyes. Disturbed, she looked at him. His deep, profound gaze was unreadable, like a bottomless vortex.

She subconsciously struggled. "Mr. Zhan, please let go of me."

Zhan Mohan, however, seemed not to hear her. He stared intently at her. Her small face grew warm, a faint blush spreading across it, like the delicate pink of peach blossoms in March.

"Where did you go just now?"

"I... I went home." Wei Yumeng's heart fluttered inexplicably under his intense gaze, and she even avoided meeting his eyes.

The man's hand rested on her waist, and he discovered how slender it was; his palm could easily encompass it.

"Do you just ignore everything I tell you?"

His cold fingertips pinched her chin, and his indifferent, ruthless voice was laced with anger.

Wei Yumeng could feel the rage in his eyes and quickly explained.

"I just went to see my mother. I didn't go anywhere else. If you don't believe me, you can check."

"What did I tell you last night?"

Wei Yumeng's heart skipped a beat, and her face suddenly changed. Damn it, how could she have forgotten about the translation?

"I'm sorry, I'll do it now."

She hurriedly got up from Zhan Mohan, grabbed the documents, and ran out. After finishing the translation, she handed it over.

To her surprise, Zhan Mohan didn't even look at it. His eyes, filled with a chilling coldness, blazed. "You made me miss a multi-billion project."

Wei Yumeng's face turned pale as she apologized. "I'm sorry, I was really delayed by something, my mother..."

"That's your problem, not mine. Wei Yumeng, you must be responsible for this loss!"

A chilling expression spread across the man's taut, handsome face. Wei Yumeng's heart pounded like a drum. A multi-billion project, what was she going to do?
