The voice, akin to a hellish asura, sent shivers down one's spine. Wei Yumeng's face turned ashen, and she instinctively looked around.
"Where are you?"
"You don't need to know where I am. Wei Yumeng, was I too kind to you, daring to find another man behind my back? It seems I haven't satisfied you enough. Tonight, wait for me!"
The man gritted his teeth with every word, his threat palpable.
"No! I was just out on an errand, I didn't do anything else."
She was afraid. She feared that the man would go mad and do anything. Zhan Mohan was still at home; if he found out, she would truly be doomed.
"What I've touched, I will never allow anyone else to touch."
A cold dial tone echoed, and Wei Yumeng's heart turned to ice.
Xin Ran, however, looked at Wei Yumeng with a strange gaze. "Yumeng, who was that on the phone just now?"
Wei Yumeng wanted to say she didn't know. Thinking of her complicated situation, she decided not to tell Xin Ran. That mysterious man watched her every move from some unseen corner. If she confessed everything to Xin Ran now, wouldn't it put him in danger?
She forced a strained smile. "It's nothing, senior. I have to go back now."
Saying that, she grabbed her bag, turned, and ran across the street, hailed a taxi, and left.
Xin Ran watched her figure disappear before his eyes, his resolve strengthening. He had to help Wei Yumeng escape her current life.
Though he didn't fully understand her situation, judging by her demeanor, she was likely not living well.
Returning to the Zhan residence, she didn't dare go upstairs immediately, fearing she might run into Zhan Mohan and have no good answer if he asked questions.
The maids in the kitchen were already cooking. The smell of oil and smoke wafted out from the window. Wei Yumeng found the smell increasingly off, her brow furrowed. Suddenly, her stomach churned violently, and she quickly rushed to the bathroom.
Her morning sickness had been getting worse lately. She still didn't know what to do about this child. If she didn't keep it, it was a life. If she did, how would she explain it to the Zhan family?
The more she thought, the more her head ached. Who was that man from that night?
As she opened the bathroom door and looked up, she saw Zhan Yichen standing at the doorway. She was so startled her heart nearly leaped out of her chest.
Zhan Yichen saw her pale face, looking as if she had seen a ghost, her expression flustered. He grew more suspicious that this woman was up to something.
He glanced inside. "What were you doing?"
"Nothing, my stomach just feels a little unwell."
"Really? Then why are you so scared to see me?" Zhan Yichen felt that this woman definitely had a secret.
Wei Yumeng suppressed her unease and tried to force a smile.
"Isn't that normal? If I were standing at the door and you suddenly appeared, wouldn't you be startled?"
Zhan Yichen didn't believe Wei Yumeng's excuse at all. He had always felt that this woman had ill intentions.
He leaned closer, and Wei Yumeng instinctively retreated, looking at Zhan Yichen warily.
"What are you doing?"
Seeing her act so demure and shy, Zhan Yichen scoffed.
"What's there to pretend? You married my brother, wasn't it just for the Zhan family's money?"
"I didn't marry him willingly," she blurted out.
If Wei Anguo hadn't threatened her with her mother's life, she would never have married a man she didn't love.
"You didn't marry willingly, so why didn't you refuse?"
In his eyes, if something was unwilling, no one could force it.
Wei Yumeng found his words somewhat amusing. She glanced at Zhan Yichen.
"What kind of background does your Zhan family have? Do I need to remind you? If I didn't marry, your grandfather would have dealt with my family. If it were you, would you disregard your family's lives for your own sake?"
These young masters who grew up with a silver spoon in their mouths, who were pampered and doted upon, how could they understand the difficulties of ordinary people like them?
Sometimes, one had no choice.
Zhan Yichen opened his mouth, speechless. This woman certainly had a sharp tongue.
Wei Yumeng looked at Zhan Yichen, her mind suddenly recalling the mysterious man's call.
Now that they were alone, she could ask Zhan Yichen, but not too directly. What if it wasn't him? Then she would expose herself.
"I wanted to ask, do you usually enter our room?"
Hearing this, Zhan Yichen's eyes narrowed. "Are you crazy? Why would I enter your room for no reason?"
"What if... you hate me so much that you want to mess with me?"
The question was phrased very subtly. Wei Yumeng felt it was unlikely to be exposed. If it were truly Zhan Yichen, he wouldn't be able to hide it, there would be some clues.
From the moment she started asking about this topic, she had been staring at Zhan Yichen's face, observing the subtle expressions.
Zhan Yichen looked at Wei Yumeng in surprise, suddenly thinking that perhaps her brain was addled.
"Wei Yumeng, do you think you're so attractive or something? Why would I sneak into your room? Do you think I'm a pervert?"
After saying that, Zhan Yichen still felt unconvinced and looked her up and down with contempt.
"With a figure as flat as yours, even if you stripped naked in front of me, I wouldn't want you!"
He didn't know where her confidence came from, to think that he would sneak into her room.
Seeing his exaggerated reaction, and the genuine disgust and disdain in his eyes, Wei Yumeng began to doubt her judgment. Had she made a mistake? Was it not Zhan Yichen? Then who else could it be?
In the entire Zhan family, the most likely candidates were Zhan Yichen and Zhan Mohan. But Zhan Mohan was paralyzed. She clearly remembered that man was agile.
Or, Zhan Mohan's paralysis was a pretense, and he wasn't actually paralyzed.
She decided she had to find a time to figure this out.
"I was just asking casually, it's nothing. I'm going back to my room."
With that, Wei Yumeng quickly walked past Zhan Yichen and left. Zhan Yichen turned back, thinking more and more angrily. Was this woman hallucinating?
As she reached the stairs, she felt a pair of piercing eyes staring at her. She instinctively looked up and saw Zhan Mohan standing above. Her heart trembled with fear.
Zhan Mohan glanced at her and spoke in a cold, bone-chilling tone.
"Did you finish what I asked you to do?"
Bringing this up, Wei Yumeng was still full of fire. She walked forward and asked him.
"Do you know Wei Jin was coming?"
Zhan Mohan frowned. "Who is Wei Jin?"
"My stepmother's daughter."
"Oh, so what?"
"So she wouldn't give me this project at all."
If she had known it was Wei Jin, she wouldn't have gone there to humiliate herself.
Zhan Mohan looked at her coldly, his words utterly unsparing.
"That's your problem, it has nothing to do with me."
