Chapter 117 I Don't Believe Anyone

“Let her in,” Zhan Mohan said.

Feng Shimin smiled at Wei Yumeng and said, “Brother Mohan wants to see you.”

Although Feng Shimin was smiling, Wei Yumeng saw a hint of schadenfreude in her eyes. Her intuition told her that a storm was waiting for her once she went in.

She entered with the documents and placed them on the table. “Director Ning asked me to give these to you.”

Zhan Mohan stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, his figure tall and slender. His black suit pants made his legs appear even longer, making him look like a perfect hanger. Wei Yumeng had never seen him wear clothes poorly.

“Mm, place them there,” he said calmly, his voice devoid of any emotion, which made Wei Yumeng uncertain. “Aren’t you going to ask me about Zhan Lin?” she wondered. Why was he letting her go so easily?

Zhan Mohan turned around, his brows and eyes regaining their usual arrogance. A chilling aura emanated from him, as if he were unapproachable. “Even if I ask you now, I doubt you’ll tell me the truth. You’ve insisted all this time that the car accident had nothing to do with you, and I had Fang Xun investigate. All the evidence points to you.”

The implication was that asking would only stir up trouble and lead to another argument between them.

Wei Yumeng gave a self-deprecating smile. “Do you believe me then?”

“I believe no one but the evidence.” In matters of great importance, anyone could lie. Just as when Wei Yumeng first entered the Zhan family, she hadn't defended herself regarding the car accident. Later, she insisted it wasn't her. Whom else could he trust?

Wei Yumeng didn’t rush to defend herself. Those who believed her wouldn’t need any explanation, and those who didn’t would never be convinced, no matter how much she spoke.

“I’ll leave then.”

“In a couple of days, come with me to the hospital to see Zhan Lin,” Zhan Mohan said suddenly as her hand reached for the doorknob.

Wei Yumeng’s expression faltered slightly. Her eyes were complex, but she finally nodded. “Okay.”

After leaving the office, she felt somewhat lost. Feng Shimin’s words earlier had worried her. This burden shouldn’t have been hers to bear, yet it felt as if it had been fixed upon her. Should she have made a deal with Wei Jin earlier and had her explain the matter to Zhan Mohan herself?

Feng Shimin was on her way to a meeting with documents in hand when she ran into Wei Yumeng. Seeing her distraught state, Feng Shimin smirked with satisfaction. “What, did Brother Mohan scold you? I told you long ago that the Zhan family isn’t a place for you. Brother Mohan is mine, and I’ll never let another woman snatch him away!”

As Feng Shimin spoke, Wei Yumeng saw a strong desire for Zhan Mohan in her eyes. Although Wei Yumeng was puzzled by the situation, she wouldn’t tolerate Feng Shimin’s provocation.

“Zhan Mohan and I are husband and wife. Whatever happens, we’ll resolve it ourselves. You are also considered his sister, so it’s best to curb these inappropriate feelings. Otherwise, if it gets out, it might harm both of your reputations.”

Feng Shimin’s eyebrows knitted together, and she glanced at Wei Yumeng dismissively. “I’m not related to Brother Mohan by blood. As long as he’s willing, reputation doesn’t matter to me. I only need him in this life.”

“Such deep affection. If only your Brother Mohan knew how scheming you are. Ning Tao must have acted on your orders before, and she also has feelings for Zhan Mohan. The enemy of my enemy is my friend, as the saying goes. But you’d best behave yourself. If he doesn’t like you, even without me, everything you do will be in vain.”

Wei Yumeng didn’t want to create unnecessary trouble for herself. Feng Shimin was trapped in her obsession for so many years. If Zhan Mohan had truly been interested in her, he wouldn’t have agreed when Old Master Zhan arranged a marriage for him. How could it have reached this point?

Whether Feng Shimin was hurt by Wei Yumeng’s words or if they struck a chord, her delicate face suddenly contorted. She glared at Wei Yumeng, enraged. “As long as you don’t leave Brother Mohan, you’ll never have a good life!”

Wei Yumeng sneered and shrugged indifferently. “I didn’t come to the Zhan family for a good life anyway.”

Feng Shimin’s fingers trembled as she pointed at Wei Yumeng, wanting to curse her out, but she refrained, mindful of her image in a public place. Finally, she gritted her teeth and issued a threat. “You just wait…”

After Feng Shimin stormed off in her high heels, Wei Yumeng slumped her shoulders wearily and walked toward her seat. Ning Tao approached her then and assigned her a task.

“Tonight, you’ll accompany Mu Linjing to meet with the other party to discuss a contract. You’ll translate for her.”

Wei Yumeng took the document. It was a collaboration with an ordinary company. This was normal; small deals were handled by ordinary employees. The higher-ups had already communicated the details and necessary parts with the other party, and this was just the final step. Zhan Corporation naturally utilized its talent where it was most needed.

She figured it was just a contract signing, and she’d be with Mu Linjing, which made her feel more secure. Moreover, even if Ning Tao was setting a trap for her, she couldn’t refuse if it was framed as work.

“Okay, when do we leave?”

“Wait for about an hour. Review the materials, and then you can explain things to them.”

“Understood.”

Wei Yumeng took the file back to her desk and informed Mu Linjing. Ning Tao watched them both, a cold glint in her eyes. She wanted to see how good their relationship truly was.

Mu Linjing was still overjoyed upon learning she and Wei Yumeng would be signing a contract. She flipped through the file. “I can’t believe Director Ning would give us this task.”

“What’s there to be surprised about? It’s just signing a contract, not something we initiated ourselves.” Wei Yumeng was less enthusiastic about this assignment. Ning Tao didn’t favor her, so if it were a simple contract signing, it would be fine, but she feared a hidden agenda.

Mu Linjing didn’t overthink it. “But you don’t know, I’ve been in the company for so long, I haven’t even seen what a contract looks like. I always feel like when people sign contracts, they look so sophisticated, as if I were a high-level executive of the company.”

Wei Yumeng chuckled as she organized the documents. “Can you be a bit more ambitious?”

“Okay, okay. Then let’s work hard and strive to become a team leader in the future.”

They chatted and laughed as they worked on their tasks. An hour later, they received the location and the other party’s information from Ning Tao and headed to the coffee shop. It was considered more sincere to arrive first when signing a contract. As ordinary employees, being late might lead to accusations of being arrogant, which would be difficult for the company to explain.

Upon arrival, Wei Yumeng pulled out the documents to verify them again. Mu Linjing, seeing her serious expression, became nervous herself. “Yumeng, don’t be so serious. I was quite excited earlier, but now I’m a bit worried.”

“It’s nothing. It’s just to prevent mistakes. You should review it again too. Director Ning doesn’t particularly like either of us. If we make another mistake, we won’t be able to escape even if we’re fired.”

Mu Linjing then remembered and nodded vigorously. “Right, right, right. If something goes wrong, Director Ning will scold us to death.”
