Zhan Mohan truly didn't understand why Wei Yumeng had a change of heart so suddenly. In the days that followed, while waiting for their household registration books, he pondered this question endlessly.
Wei Yumeng wasn't someone who acted impulsively, especially not when it came to something as significant as registering their marriage.
His first thought was that he must have done something wrong. Yet, upon careful reflection, he couldn't recall anything that would have angered Wei Yumeng.
Perplexed, he sat in his office, unable to concentrate on his work. Fang Xun entered and exited several times, noticing that not a single page of the documents in his hand had been turned. He couldn't help but interject, "General Manager Zhan, we still have a lot of work to do today."
He set the files aside and replied absently, "What do you need to prepare before getting married?"
Fang Xun was caught off guard by the sudden question. He had never even been to the civil affairs bureau himself, let alone knew what preparations were needed before marriage.
Just as he was about to shake his head, he suddenly recalled that the General Manager had seemingly been "rejected" by his wife a few days prior. He suddenly understood, realizing that the General Manager was troubled by this matter.
Naturally, he wanted to offer his boss some advice. After much thought, he proposed a reasonable suggestion, "I think perhaps you haven't sincerely confessed to your wife. You even confessed to Miss Jiang before, so your wife might feel unbalanced seeing that."
This indeed reminded Zhan Mohan. Jiang Si Yu's confession from Jing Yan had been quite heartfelt. He, on the other hand, had never confessed to Wei Yumeng, and it was true that he had wronged her.
So, he put aside his work and began searching for ways to confess, etc. However, almost every result was dominated by two prominent words: Proposal.
As they appeared with increasing frequency, they naturally drew attention. Fundamentally, Zhan Mohan had no real concept of proposals. Yet, he recalled on the day they went to register their marriage, Wei Yumeng had been constantly looking at the crowd gathered in the distance, as if watching a proposal.
It was then that he understood why Wei Yumeng had suddenly changed her mind. A confession, a proposal – he had done neither. It was no wonder she was unwilling to go through with the marriage so haphazardly.
Having understood Wei Yumeng's needs, his work efficiency improved significantly. After all, he had to finish his work first to have more time to prepare a surprise.
Wei Yumeng, unaware that he had understood her intentions, was confined to confinement after childbirth. She couldn't go out freely and could only practice yoga and postpartum recovery at home. Fortunately, Mu Linjing visited her often; otherwise, she would surely have gone stir-crazy during her confinement.
However, Mu Linjing always had to work. It was only during work that she could feel at ease, as advancing her career through her own abilities was the best way to narrow the gap between her and Zhan Yichen.
Perhaps because this idea had taken root in her heart, when Zhan Mohan called her to his office, her subconscious reaction was that she might be getting a promotion. As a result, when she arrived at the office, she found Zhan Yichen was also there.
She then guessed that the theme of this meeting was likely not about a promotion.
As expected, Zhan Mohan turned around and looked at them both with a distressed expression, seeking their advice, "What kind of proposal do you think Yumeng would like?"
This was the first time he had revealed his intention to propose to outsiders. He had previously considered completing this task alone, but only after he started working on it did he realize it was not that simple.
Because he cared, he repeatedly considered how to please Wei Yumeng. As someone directly involved, he couldn't come up with good ideas.
Not having known beforehand, Mu Linjing's first reaction upon hearing his question was surprise, "General Manager Zhan, you're going to propose?"
Zhan Yichen quickly made a shushing gesture, "My dearest, don't spread it around. If everyone knows, where's the surprise?"
Mu Linjing quickly covered her mouth and lowered her voice, "Then are you sure about the date for the proposal?"
"On Yumeng's birthday. It will be right after she finishes her confinement, and I'll be hosting a grand birthday banquet for her."
That was indeed a good date. In the future, every birthday would be a double anniversary.
Counting the days, there was less than a month left until Wei Yumeng's birthday. While it sounded like a long time, a month was rather short to prepare for such a grand proposal.
The group needed to hurry to discuss this matter and then implement it, which was no small undertaking.
Wei Yumeng was still unaware of the surprise awaiting her. At home, taking care of her two babies, she had plenty to do.
The turmoil surrounding Jiang Si Yu had passed some time ago, but Wei Yumeng hadn't heard any updates from Zhan Mohan. She suspected that the subsequent progress might not have been smooth. Thus, while chatting with Grandpa Zhan, she tried to probe for information.
Grandpa Zhan had been aware of this matter all along. Although he didn't interfere, he needed to be fully informed of all developments.
Moreover, when Wei Yumeng brought it up, he immediately understood her meaning.
"Jiang Si Yu was convicted on multiple charges including economic crimes and kidnapping and was sentenced to life imprisonment. However, upon her arrest, it was discovered that she had already left the country. Many people are looking for her now, including Mohan's people."
Knowing that this news would displease Wei Yumeng, Grandpa Zhan added, "Don't worry. Heaven's net is vast and its mesh is fine. The overseas is not that large; finding her will merely take some time. Besides, she invested all her assets into projects. Without financial support, how far can she run?"
His words were reasonable, and Wei Yumeng didn't feel as unhappy. Zhan Mohan's efforts for her were already more than enough.
"Grandpa, she was sentenced to life imprisonment. Did the Zhan family have a hand in this?"
Although she knew Jiang Si Yu deserved her punishment, and even with Zhan Mohan's pressure, the outcome would likely be similar, if Zhan Mohan had played a part, she could at least be sure that Jiang Si Yu would never have an opportunity to resurface.
Grandpa Zhan didn't evade the question. "Since Jiang Si Yu bullied you and the two children so much, Mohan and I naturally should support you and your children. That woman is extremely wicked; prison is her best destination."
Hearing Grandpa Zhan say this, Wei Yumeng felt a little touched. Having someone to back her up indeed provided a great sense of security.
Up until this point in her life, she was finally able to truly experience the feeling of having a family. A family with a supportive husband and elders, and sons and daughters whom she loved. Such a family compensated for all the regrets of her previous life. When the children grew up and started their own families, her life would be complete.
"Oh, Grandpa, has there been anything happening at the company recently? I feel like Mohan has been very busy every day."
