Jing Yan was not so foolish as to let his intellect drop with his love life. When Grandpa Zhan reminded him, he immediately suspected Jiang Siyu.
"Grandpa Zhan, I will listen to you," he said.
Grandpa Zhan nodded, and the two returned.
Jiang Siyu's heart pounded, afraid that Jing Yan might discover something. However, Jing Yan's attitude hadn't changed much from before, which relieved her somewhat.
"Siyu, there's nothing for us here. Let's go," Jing Yan said.
Jiang Siyu was worried about other matters and had no mood to contend with Mu Linjing, so she obediently followed him back.
The remaining few people waited outside anxiously for news. Meanwhile, inside the delivery room, after much hardship, Wei Yumeng finally heard the first cry of her child.
The doctor first patted the baby's back and soles, helping him take his first breath.
"Congratulations, it's a boy. This child isn't big, but his cry is loud. He doesn't sound like a premature baby at all. It's clear how much you, the mother, have taken care of him."
Zhan Mohan didn't care if the child was a boy or a girl. As long as mother and child were safe, he was content.
He kissed the back of Wei Yumeng's hand, and hot tears rolled down his nose, falling onto her hand. "Yumeng, you've worked hard."
Wei Yumeng was about to smile in relief when she felt a sharp pain in her abdomen again, her features contorting.
The anxious Zhan Mohan thought she had some accident, but the doctor's voice was filled with surprise, "Quickly, there's another one inside!"
Wei Yumeng was both surprised and delighted, but the pain became her way of expressing joy. The previous process had to be repeated.
However, she did have some experience now, and the second child always came out more easily than the first, so the pain this time did not last as long as before.
"This time it's a girl. You'll be so blessed now, with both a son and a daughter. Such fortune that many envy."
Watching the doctor's palm cradle the tiny infant, Wei Yumeng's vision blurred. Her children had finally been born safely.
Two streams of hot tears fell, and Zhan Mohan gently wiped them away for her. "Don't cry. We have a son and a daughter; we should be happy."
As he said this, had he not just wiped away his own tears?
Those outside had waited impatiently. Grandpa Zhan, who had seen it all, could no longer remain calm. "Why has it been so long? Is there a problem?"
As soon as he spoke, the delivery room door opened, and they quickly crowded around.
Wei Yumeng was pushed out, utterly exhausted. She didn't say much to Mu Linjing, merely patted her hand to indicate she was alright.
The two doctors also showed the babies to Grandpa Zhan. "A boy and a girl, you must be overjoyed, sir!"
Grandpa Zhan grinned from ear to ear, every wrinkle on his face seemingly radiating benevolence.
"Twins are wonderful. My granddaughter-in-law is truly remarkable. Cen Yuan, quickly call home and have them prepare some soup to be sent over for Yumeng to recuperate."
This was the first time Wei Yumeng had received such care from him. Although she knew it was mostly due to the children, it was still nice to be treated this way. Unfortunately, she was too tired to even say thank you.
"The children were born prematurely and will need to stay in the incubator for a few days. We'll take them over now."
After bidding farewell, the doctors prepared to take the babies away. Grandpa Zhan was very worried, fearing any accident might befall his precious great-grandchildren, and insisted on going with the doctors.
Watching the babies being placed into the incubators, Grandpa Zhan still refused to leave. From behind layers of glass, he doted on the two children from afar, pointing them out to Cen Yuan. "Look, my great-grandson is smiling at me. Doesn't he look just like Mohan when he was little?"
Cen Yuan couldn't help but chuckle. Children changed so much day by day at this age; what could he possibly discern? This old man was too impatient.
After watching the babies for a long time, Grandpa Zhan finally left, turning back several times. These two great-grandchildren had truly captured his heart.
Arriving at the ward, Wei Yumeng had already fallen asleep. The ordeal had understandably exhausted her.
"How is she? Is everything alright?"
Mu Linjing nodded quickly. "The doctor said Yumeng is fine, just tired. Don't worry."
He then nodded in reassurance and took Cen Yuan home. He had to oversee the household's dietary arrangements. Everyone understood that after childbirth, nourishment was crucial, so Wei Yumeng's diet had to be handled with extreme care, for fear that someone might tamper with it.
Upon returning home, his suspicious gaze fell upon the servants making soup in the kitchen.
Seeing him return, Wen Yulan immediately inquired about the hospital. "How is it, Dad? Did she give birth?"
Wen Yulan had never shown such concern for Wei Yumeng's affairs before. Grandpa Zhan could see through her thoughts at a glance and simply grunted coldly, "A pair of twins."
What should have been a joyous announcement left both of them unhappy. Upon hearing that Wei Yumeng had given birth to twins, Wen Yulan's first thought was regret. Why hadn't she gotten rid of her own child when she was pregnant?
Now, with a pair of twins appearing out of nowhere, no matter how she planned for Zhan Yichen's future, she would likely be forever overshadowed by Zhan Mohan.
Grandpa Zhan noticed her expression and, knowing she wouldn't be happy about it, directly kicked her out of the kitchen.
After she left, he ordered the servants to make another pot of soup and send it to the hospital.
Wen Yulan witnessed this entire scene. She couldn't help but clench her fists, her nails digging into her palms. This old man truly didn't trust her.
She had indeed considered tampering with Wei Yumeng's soup, but the risk factor was too high, and she was still wavering. She had been watching the servants make the soup, hesitating between doing it and not doing it.
Now she had made up her mind. So what if they were twins? No one could stop her from paving the way for her son.
Back in her room, she quietly sent a message to Jiang Siyu: "Wei Yumeng has given birth to twins. Your fantasies are likely shattered."
She knew that if Jiang Siyu learned of Wei Yumeng having twins, she would undoubtedly try to get rid of the children. This was a ready-made, and the most effective, tool. Why wouldn't she use it?
Just as she had guessed, Jiang Siyu almost spat blood upon seeing the message. Wei Yumeng's ability to conceive Han's child was already a stretch, and now she had given birth to a pair of envied twins. Didn't this leave her with no chance at all?
No, she would not allow these two children to exist!
Thinking this, she gave a dark, hooked smile. Who said there was no way to deal with them after birth? Dealing with two newborn infants would be as easy as pie.
