"Mom! We're here, where are you?" Wei Yumeng shouted loudly.
Wei Yumeng and Catherine had arrived at the agreed meeting spot, but after calling out for a long time, there was no one around.
Catherine was starting to get anxious. If the kidnappers were truly after money, and they were delayed in showing up, could something else have gone wrong?
If that were the case, what would Song Lijun's situation be like now?
Wei Yumeng was already extremely worried, but Catherine's attitude gradually shifted. She even stopped looking for Song Lijun and sat down to watch Wei Yumeng.
Wei Yumeng found it a bit strange and turned to look at Catherine.
"Are you feeling unwell?"
Wei Yumeng didn't think too deeply about it, as Catherine was pregnant and it was already difficult for her to be there.
However, Catherine let out a cold smile. "Wei Yumeng, you don't really think I'm here with you to pay the ransom, do you?"
Wei Yumeng froze. "Then what do you plan to do?"
"As long as Song Lijun and Feng Zhenhua are around, this family will never be mine. So..."
"So you plan to get rid of Mrs. Feng while you have the chance?"
Wei Yumeng clenched her fists as she spoke. She naturally wouldn't allow such a thing to happen, but what could she do now?
"You guessed right. I never intended to save her." As she spoke, Catherine took out the box that was supposed to contain the money. Upon opening it, Wei Yumeng found it filled with waste paper.
Wei Yumeng hadn't expected Catherine to have such a trick up her sleeve. What should she do now? Their ransom money was gone. No matter what, they probably wouldn't be able to bring Song Lijun back today.
Moreover... even if the kidnappers found out everything, they might directly...
Wei Yumeng was too afraid to continue that thought. But what could she do now?
Since the kidnappers hadn't shown up yet, they might still have time. Perhaps they could find another way to send the five million yuan.
Wei Yumeng hated the feeling of being manipulated by the kidnappers, but for Song Lijun's safety, she had no choice but to go along with it for now.
Just as Wei Yumeng was about to turn back, Catherine grabbed her. "Do you think I don't know what you're thinking? Do you think I'll let you go back to prepare again?"
"Let me go!" Wei Yumeng was getting anxious. She didn't know what terrible things might happen if they delayed any further.
But Catherine held onto her arm tightly, refusing to let go.
Wei Yumeng, in her desperation, forcefully shook her arm. Catherine fell directly to the ground, even hitting her head on a nearby rock.
"Wei Yumeng! You..." Catherine wanted to say more, but the pain rendered her speechless.
A trickle of blood began to flow from under her head. Seeing this, Wei Yumeng froze in place. She hadn't expected this at all.
"Catherine, you..."
"Don't come near me! You madwoman, you're trying to kill my child!"
As soon as she finished speaking, they heard other voices, and among them, surprisingly, was Song Lijun.
"Linlin! Yumeng! Where are you?"
Wei Yumeng was momentarily stunned. What was going on? Had she been tricked from the beginning?
"Mom, we're here!" Catherine shouted with all her might. Wei Yumeng could even see a hint of mockery in her eyes.
Wei Yumeng now understood everything completely. It was likely all Catherine's plan, including the loss of the child, which she had orchestrated.
When Song Lijun arrived and saw Catherine's pitiful state, she immediately took her to the hospital.
"Doctor, how is my daughter?"
The doctor looked at them and finally shook his head. "The adult is fine, but the child could not be saved."
Song Lijun swayed, nearly fainting. "How could this happen?"
Catherine, crying, said to Song Lijun, "Mom, you can't protect her this time. It was all her fault for deliberately bringing me to that place and pushing me. Did she think this would go unnoticed?"
Wei Yumeng looked at Catherine coldly. "I didn't."
But Song Lijun looked at Wei Yumeng. "Yumeng, why would you do that? Only the two of you were there at the time. Do you expect me to believe that Linlin lost her child by herself?"
Wei Yumeng lowered her head. She knew that with just her words, it would be impossible to convince anyone to believe her.
"Whether you believe me or not, I didn't do any of that. The whole situation is not what you see."
In fact, Wei Yumeng clearly remembered that although she had indeed flicked her arm, she had been mindful of Catherine's pregnancy and hadn't used much force. It was impossible for her to have fallen so badly.
But how could she prove any of this now?
She had no way to defend herself.
Soon, Zhan Mohan arrived. He frowned upon hearing about the incident.
"I believe Yumeng," he said simply.
But Catherine began to yell at them hysterically. "You're family, so you'll naturally side with your own. What about me? How will you compensate me for my child!"
Zhan Mohan ignored the increasingly hysterical Catherine and turned to Song Lijun.
"Mrs. Feng, I hope you can give us some time. I will definitely get to the bottom of this and give you an answer."
Although Song Lijun was angry about Catherine's situation, she hadn't completely lost her reason. She nodded. "Alright, I'll give you a chance to prove yourselves. But if you can't give Linlin an explanation in the end, I will pursue legal action."
With that, Song Lijun ushered Wei Yumeng and Zhan Mohan out of the hospital room.
Watching the door to the room close, Wei Yumeng's heart was filled with a complex mix of emotions. After a period of peace, why had this happened again?
"Mohan, I really didn't do it." Wei Yumeng finally began to cry, feeling wronged.
She had tried to be strong earlier, but seeing the look in Song Lijun's eyes was too much of a blow.
Only when she was alone with Zhan Mohan did she dare to let her emotions show.
Zhan Mohan pulled her into a hug. "I believe you. When we get home, tell me everything. I'll have Fang Xun investigate thoroughly. Trust me."
Wei Yumeng nodded. Thinking back, there were too many strange things about this incident, and perhaps they could all become leads for the investigation.
