Chapter 1299 A Lifetime of Regret

Zhan Yichen and Mu Linjing saw Qin Xing walk out alone, wiping away tears.

"Why did you come out by yourself? How did it go?" Zhan Yichen grabbed Qin Xing's arm.

Qin Xing looked at him and immediately knelt down. "I truly know I was wrong. I will take good care of you all until... until I am forgiven."

Mu Linjing was also startled by this action, not knowing what had happened to make him like this.

Wei Yumeng watched Qin Xing leave, her whole body deflating like a pricked balloon. She leaned into Zhan Mohan's embrace.

No one could understand how much effort she had exerted to suppress the anger and sadness in her heart when she saw Qin Xing.

She had almost been unable to speak calmly to Qin Xing.

Thankfully, she managed. Even in such a situation, she maintained her composure.

"Mohan, I'm sorry," Wei Yumeng suddenly whispered. "I couldn't avenge our baby. I clearly should have given him closure, but..."

Zhan Mohan shook his head. "No, your approach was not wrong. It was just another way to make him compensate. Moreover..."

He took a deep breath and continued, "By doing this, you will likely make him remember this for the rest of his life, regretting what he did forever."

Wasn't this kind of method more terrifying than direct punishment?

Perhaps if he were made to compensate and expelled from Pengcheng, Qin Xing could still find a new life.

But Wei Yumeng had made Qin Xing unable to forget what he had done, forcing someone to live in regret, even until death.

However, Zhan Mohan also believed that Wei Yumeng hadn't thought that far ahead.

Wei Yumeng was surprised by Zhan Mohan's words. She truly hadn't considered that.

She felt partly responsible for what had happened. She couldn't blame everything on one young man. Rather than blaming others, she considered it her own fault.

"Alright, Mohan, I want to rest," Wei Yumeng said, taking a deep breath. She felt as though something important had finally been lifted from her heart.

Zhan Mohan nodded. "Then get some good rest."

As Zhan Mohan prepared to get up, Wei Yumeng reached out and held him back. "Don't go. I want you to stay with me. The baby is gone, and I'm so afraid... I'm so afraid of suddenly losing you too..."

Zhan Mohan reached out and tucked Wei Yumeng in. "Okay, sleep soundly. I will stay here with you."

Wei Yumeng nodded but didn't let go of Zhan Mohan's hand as she closed her eyes.

Zhan Mohan held Wei Yumeng's hand tightly, wanting to give her strength through this touch.

Sometimes, even Zhan Mohan admired Wei Yumeng's ability to handle everything rationally under such circumstances, something he himself couldn't always do.

"Yumeng, you've been through so much."

Zhan Mohan leaned down and gently kissed Wei Yumeng's forehead.

In the following days, Wei Yumeng remained in the hospital to recuperate, and Qin Xing took on the responsibility of caring for her.

Although Wei Yumeng would still wake up remembering nightmares, she gradually learned to control her emotions.

Qin Xing, in front of her, served as a constant reminder of her carelessness, which led to the unfortunate consequences.

"Yumeng, is this really okay?" Mu Linjing said to Qin Xing, still feeling uneasy. "He did something like that, and you just let him go. It's too lenient."

But Wei Yumeng shook her head. "You're slightly mistaken. I haven't let him go. I will always remember what he did. I've just given him another way to atone."

"But..." Mu Linjing felt a sense of unfairness. She still believed that Zhan Mohan's previous decision was more appropriate.

"Alright, it's already decided. Don't dwell on it. By the way, how is Grandpa doing lately?" Wei Yumeng immediately changed the subject. She didn't want to continue this conversation.

Continuing would only remind her of the child she had lost.

Mu Linjing didn't answer Wei Yumeng and instead continued, "I truly admire you sometimes. After such a major incident, you're still able to accept it so bravely."

Wei Yumeng lowered her head. "But what else can I do if I don't accept it? It has already happened."

This also made her recall events from a few days ago.

Even after dealing with Qin Xing, her emotions were still unstable, and she dreamt of her lost child every night.

For her sake, Zhan Mohan even stayed with her in the hospital for several nights, comforting her.

It was Zhan Mohan's company that made her realize she hadn't lost everything with the loss of her child. She still had her family and Zhan Mohan.

Even for Zhan Mohan, she had to be strong.

So later, whenever she started to feel sad or uncontrollably recalled that incident, she would remind herself of Zhan Shiqing, Zhan Jinzhi, and Zhan Mohan. She would imagine her family, and this would help her find the strength to persevere.

"If something like this happened to me, I think I would go crazy," Mu Linjing said, her face turning pale as if she were already imagining the scenario.

Wei Yumeng playfully pinched Mu Linjing's nose. "What are you thinking? You shouldn't curse yourself like that. You and Yichen have such a good relationship. It's not impossible to have another baby in the future. Don't say such disheartening things."

"Who wants to have another baby with him?" Although Mu Linjing said this, her cheeks blushed slightly.

Seeing Mu Linjing's expression, Wei Yumeng felt her own mood lighten.

"Right, you still haven't told me how Grandpa is doing?" This time, Wei Yumeng genuinely wanted to know about Old Master Zhan's condition.

Zhan Mohan had kept it from her before. Now that she knew, she couldn't visit him personally and could only ask this way.

Mu Linjing sighed again. "Grandpa he..."

This was in Old Master Zhan's ward. Zhan Yangyi and Chen Yutong were offering food to Old Master Zhan.

"Grandpa, please eat something. We've already handled that matter, and Yumeng doesn't blame you. Please don't treat your body this way," Chen Yutong said, trying to feed Old Master Zhan again.

But Old Master Zhan snorted and turned his head away. "Even if Yumeng doesn't blame me, how can I forgive myself? You two should just leave me be!"

Zhan Yangyi said helplessly, "Grandpa, don't be stubborn. Regardless, your health is paramount."

Old Master Zhan still wouldn't listen. He was completely consumed by self-blame and regret. The mere thought of Zhan Mohan's expression that day only made Old Master Zhan more distressed.
