Zhan Mohan frowned slightly, a hint of indifference in his eyes. "Couldn't think straight for a moment?"
As he spoke, a cold smile tugged at the corner of his lips. Judging by the outcome, Catherine had been meticulously planning for a long time. Perhaps only Song Lijun believed she had simply been unable to think straight.
"Yes, Mr. Zhan, I can guarantee that Linlin will never do such a thing again," Song Lijun said, tears already streaming down her face.
Wei Yumeng looked at Zhan Mohan, then at Song Lijun. She had indeed softened. For some reason, seeing Song Lijun like this made her heart ache, though she couldn't pinpoint the reason.
Objectively, she didn't want to forgive Catherine's actions. But in this situation, she found it hard to be ruthless.
She took Zhan Mohan's hand. He subconsciously looked at her, and Wei Yumeng shook her head.
Zhan Mohan sighed inwardly. He had anticipated Wei Yumeng's attitude might change, but this matter was too serious for him to overlook.
Song Lijun naturally noticed their subtle interaction. She knew how deep the bond between Zhan Mohan and Wei Yumeng was. If Wei Yumeng spoke up for her, there was still hope.
"Mr. Zhan, Mrs. Zhan, if you are willing to let Linlin go, our family will do anything," Song Lijun said, and then, with a thud, she knelt on the ground.
This action was entirely unexpected by Wei Yumeng and Zhan Mohan. The moment Song Lijun knelt, Wei Yumeng felt a sudden pang in her chest.
"Mrs. Feng, please get up quickly," Wei Yumeng said anxiously. She genuinely felt she couldn't accept such a profound gesture.
But Song Lijun stubbornly remained kneeling. "If you don't agree, I'd rather kneel here forever, atoning for Linlin's sins until you forgive her."
Song Lijun's face was filled with determination, indicating she had no intention of getting up.
Wei Yumeng took a deep breath. She had only been feeling a bit soft-hearted before, but seeing a mother act this way for her child, how could she stand by and watch?
"Mohan, how about we let it go this time? Although Catherine did wrong, thankfully, no one was harmed. Let's give her a chance."
Hearing Wei Yumeng's words, Song Lijun looked at her with even more gratitude.
Zhan Mohan looked at Wei Yumeng. He was truly glad that Wei Yumeng didn't know her true identity. Otherwise, a scene like this would have been devastating for her.
Ultimately, this was Catherine's issue, and not directly related to this couple. And Song Lijun had gone this far for Catherine. Even Zhan Mohan found it hard to be completely heartless, especially since Song Lijun was Wei Yumeng's mother.
Seeing that Zhan Mohan remained silent, Wei Yumeng squeezed his hand again.
Zhan Mohan took a deep breath and then looked at Song Lijun. "Alright, I will let Catherine go this time. But I need you to understand, this leniency is only for Mrs. Feng's sake. I will retain all the evidence."
As he spoke, a dangerous glint flashed in his eyes. "But if Catherine ever does anything to harm Yumeng again, I will submit all the evidence to the police."
"Don't worry, I will keep an eye on Linlin and prevent her from making the same mistake again," Song Lijun replied hastily, fearing that Zhan Mohan might change his mind in the next second.
Wei Yumeng finally relaxed. She hoped Catherine would truly learn her lesson this time.
After thanking Zhan Mohan and Wei Yumeng multiple times, Song Lijun turned and left the ward.
Wei Yumeng watched Song Lijun's retreating back, a pang of heartache in her chest. Song Lijun was such a good mother, yet Catherine had done such things. She was truly thoughtless.
"Husband, thank you."
Zhan Mohan was taken aback. He didn't understand why Wei Yumeng was thanking him.
"Are you thanking me on Catherine's behalf?"
Wei Yumeng shook her head. "I haven't forgiven what she did that easily. It's just that seeing Mrs. Feng leave with peace of mind has made me feel much better, and that's because my husband let them go."
Zhan Mohan looked at Wei Yumeng with a probing gaze. He was certain Wei Yumeng truly didn't know her real background. But could Wei Yumeng's attitude towards Song Lijun be influenced by their actual blood relationship?
Zhan Mohan sat by the bedside, reaching out to gently caress Wei Yumeng's cheek. "You rest well. Leave the rest to me."
Wei Yumeng nodded slightly, lay down, and closed her eyes.
Zhan Mohan held her hand, staying by her side in quiet companionship.
Song Lijun finally breathed a sigh of relief when she returned to Catherine's ward. Regardless, her trip had not been in vain, and Catherine wouldn't have to go to jail.
Catherine, seeing Song Lijun return, was also anxious to know the outcome. After all, no one feared their future being ruined more than she did.
"Mom, you're finally back. What was the result? Am I… am I still going to jail?" Catherine's eyes welled up with tears.
Song Lijun patted Catherine's hand reassuringly. "Don't worry, they're not going to turn over the evidence. But you must remember, you cannot do the same thing again. Otherwise, even I won't be able to help you."
Upon hearing that Song Lijun had resolved the issue, Catherine didn't bother with further pleasantries. "This time it's all thanks to you, Mom. I promise, I've truly realized my mistake this time, and I will change!"
Song Lijun sighed, shaking her head helplessly. "You don't need to promise me. There's someone you've truly wronged, and you should apologize to her in person."
Catherine nodded silently. Although she hadn't fully come to terms with Wei Yumeng, the current situation forced her to humble herself.
Wei Yumeng didn't know how long she had slept. As long as Zhan Mohan was by her side, she could always sleep soundly. However, when she woke up, Zhan Mohan was nowhere to be seen.
She only found food and water on the table beside her, along with the medicine she needed, already portioned out. Beneath the cup was a note: "I've prepared food, water, and medicine. Something came up at the company, so I had to leave temporarily. I'll be back soon, don't worry."
Wei Yumeng recognized Zhan Mohan's handwriting and a slight smile curved her lips. Even such a small gesture warmed her heart.
But at that moment, she saw someone standing by the hospital room window, hesitating as if debating whether to come in.
"Who's out there?" Wei Yumeng asked tentatively.
The person seemed surprised that Wei Yumeng had noticed. Their figure paused slightly before they replied, "It's me, Catherine. Can we talk?"
"Come in," Wei Yumeng said.
