Zhan Mohan calmly tossed the iron rod in his hand to the subordinate behind him. It was still stained with the blood of the man curled up on the ground.
His hand had been broken off just like that.
Zhan Mohan bent down, his foot stepping on the man, and said coldly, "This is the consequence of you daring to touch my people."
Then, he looked at Kai, who was ashen-faced beside him, and slowly said, "As long as anyone dares to touch Wei Yumeng, they will never leave me unscathed."
"Drag him away," Zhan Mohan said, lifting his foot off the man and sitting back down.
Fang Xun directed his men to carry the man, who had gone limp like a puddle of mud and could barely let out a weak sound of pain, out.
Zhan Mohan showed no mercy to anyone who dared to harm Wei Yumeng.
After the man was dragged away, the pool of blood left behind emitted a pungent, fishy odor. Zhan Mohan took a tissue from Fang Xun, wiping his hands as he asked indifferently, "Tell me, what is your relationship with Catherine?"
The mention of Catherine's name seemed to be a trigger for Kai. The moment it was uttered, he became as prickly as a hedgehog, bristling with hostility.
"I don't know her," Kai said faintly, turning his head away from Zhan Mohan.
"Don't know her?" Zhan Mohan chuckled at this. "If you don't know her, then what was your purpose in doing all this today?"
Kai stubbornly retorted, "I just can't stand Wei Yumeng. You can kill me or flog me as you please!"
Instead of getting angry, Zhan Mohan smiled. "Catherine truly has good taste, finding such a stubborn bone as you."
Kai glared at him, shouting excitedly, "I already told you I know her!"
Zhan Mohan ignored him and gave a look to Fang Xun beside him. Fang Xun, understanding, pulled out a voice recorder from his pocket and pressed the play button in front of Kai.
After a series of crackles, Catherine's voice came through.
"If you succeed in this, I'll be yours. You must make Wei Yumeng's life unbearable, ruin her reputation!"
Just by hearing the voice, Zhan Mohan could picture her malicious face.
"Don't worry, Linlin, I'll definitely handle this properly this time. Wait for me, and I'll treat you well in the future." Then, Kai's voice followed.
Ever since Fang Xun had let Kai go, he had kept people following him. They knew that since Catherine hadn't succeeded the first time, there would surely be a second.
As expected, they caught Kai red-handed at the coffee shop that evening.
Zhan Mohan curled his lips and looked at Kai, saying coldly, "Do you think you have any explanation left?"
Kai was stunned. He never imagined that his conversation with Catherine would be recorded. Yet, he still refused to betray Catherine, stubbornly saying, "I orchestrated all of this. It has nothing to do with Catherine. I did it willingly!"
Seeing his near-frantic state, Zhan Mohan felt a pang of pity.
He leaned closer to Kai, staring into his eyes, and asked, "Does Catherine know you're protecting her like a dog?"
This single sentence struck Kai's sore spot. Like a wolf, he bared his fangs at Zhan Mohan, panting heavily, and retorted, "It's none of your business what kind of person I am!"
Zhan Mohan shook his head helplessly at the man and waved his hand. Fang Xun promptly handed over a stack of photos he had prepared earlier.
Zhan Mohan presented the photos to Kai, raising an eyebrow. "Take a good look. Who is this woman in the photos?"
The photos flickered one by one in Zhan Mohan's hand. Different scenes, different men, but all featuring the same face that he knew too well.
Kai was stunned and asked blankly, "What do you mean by this?"
Zhan Mohan sneered, "Don't you understand what this means? You are merely a pawn in Catherine's hands."
"You're lying!" Kai's head throbbed as if struck by a blunt object. He couldn't believe, couldn't believe Catherine would do this to him.
"You're just trying to trick me with these photos, don't even think about it!" he shouted, agitated.
Zhan Mohan's expression was placid. "If you wish to continue deceiving yourself, then so be it."
His words shattered Kai. He collapsed to his knees, pounding the ground in anger. Soon, the flesh on his hands was torn open by the cement floor, bleeding profusely.
Zhan Mohan glanced at Fang Xun, who quickly found a rope and tied Kai up.
Catherine had always been a social butterfly, and these photos were merely what Fang Xun had managed to capture recently. They had no idea how many more existed from before.
This revelation left Kai reeling. He had worked so hard for Catherine, only to realize he was just a chess piece in her game.
She had never included him in her future plans from the very beginning.
Seeing his dazed state, Zhan Mohan tossed the photos at his feet. "You should have seen what kind of person Catherine was long ago."
"I'm giving you a chance now. Tell me everything you know, and I can give you a chance to live," Zhan Mohan said, dusting off his suit.
Kai's gaze was fixed on the photos on the ground. Knowing he had been used and deceived by Catherine, he decided that since she was ruthless, he would be unrighteous in return.
"Actually, the assassination attempt at the hospital earlier was also instigated by Catherine."
"She told me she felt that Song Lijun and the others no longer liked her. For Feng's assets, she wanted to end Song Lijun and Feng Zhenhua with drug injections."
"She ordered me to do all of this, and she promised to be with me once it was done."
Tears welled up in Kai's eyes as he spoke. From his school days, he had been Catherine's follower. He thought he had finally made it.
But it turned out to be the beginning of an abyss.
"Anything else?" Zhan Mohan emanated a dark aura.
Kai wiped the tears from his face and continued, "This time, she also approached me proactively. She wanted to ruin Wei Yumeng, asked me to find someone to do her in, and to take photos and post them online. She said that would make Wei Yumeng unable to hold her head up forever."
Zhan Mohan's oppressive aura was so thick it was suffocating. His hands, which had been hanging by his sides, clenched into fists, and veins bulged on his forehead.
Now that they knew Catherine's plan, the most important thing was not to alert her. They needed her to reveal her hand of her own accord.
Looking at Kai, who was weeping before him, Zhan Mohan forced himself to calm down. He kicked him lightly and asked, "Do you want to live?"
"Yes, I do!" Kai nodded repeatedly, fearing that a moment's hesitation would lead to his end at the hands of this devil-like man.
Zhan Mohan nodded. "Since you don't want to die, do as I say. As long as this is done, you will be safe."
