Chapter 869 The Scapegoat

"Mrs. Feng."

Kai Mei thought that Song Lijun would actually seek him out, but after a moment's thought, he knew why Song Lijun was looking for him.

"I'm looking for you today about Linlin," Song Lijun said, "Only you can save Linlin now."

Kai had been troubled by this matter for a long time. Of course, he didn't want Catherine's life to be tarnished. Although he could tolerate Catherine no matter what, Catherine still needed her own life.

"Mrs. Feng, if there's anything I can do, please don't hesitate to say so."

Song Lijun sighed and then told Kai about Liu Wei's and her plan.

"I know this choice is selfish, but if you're willing to save Linlin, we'll be very grateful," Song Lijun said with a plea in her voice. "We have no other choice, but how can I watch Linlin suffer like that?"

Looking at Song Lijun before him, Kai felt even more sad. He didn't blame Song Lijun for coming up with this plan, as she only wanted to save Catherine.

But what was most important now was his own choice.

If he agreed to this plan, all the blame would undoubtedly be placed on Kai, and he would likely be directly sentenced. Although they hadn't committed murder or arson, it was enough to leave a stain on his life record.

Such a stain could affect the rest of his life.

But did the current Kai not want to save Catherine? He even felt that as long as Catherine was safe, he didn't care what he paid.

Perhaps this choice, which outsiders might consider difficult and cruel, was a fulfillment for Kai.

It was a fulfillment that he could do something big for Catherine and make her remember him forever.

Finally, Kai looked at Song Lijun and said, "Mrs. Feng, don't worry. I agree to your plan. As long as Catherine can be saved, what does it matter if I'm put on trial? I'm a man, and I'll have opportunities to build a career in the future. Moreover, in my life, nothing is more important than Catherine."

Song Lijun looked at the young man before her, feeling a touch of emotion. From her perspective as an elder, Kai's feelings for Catherine were genuine. If things hadn't turned out this way, she would have been very relieved to entrust Catherine's future to this man.

But now, she had to choose such a sacrifice.

"You're a good child. In the end, it's our family that has wronged you," Song Lijun slowly lowered her head, tears already streaming down her face.

Not long after Song Lijun left, Kai prepared himself and headed to the police station again. This time, he would confess everything he had done.

Wei Yumeng initially thought that the matter was over, but she didn't expect Catherine to be released.

Her fears had indeed come true. No wonder Catherine had told her that this wasn't over yet.

Zhan Mohan frowned, looking at the various documents in his hand, seemingly pondering where the problem lay.

"Mohan, can you tell me what happened?" Wei Yumeng knew the outcome but nothing else.

"The police station just called me and said that the evidence we submitted still has issues after detailed investigation. Kai has taken all the blame today, so after deliberation by the police, they believe Kai is more likely the mastermind, and Catherine might have just been the one who strategized out of concern for her boyfriend."

"How could this be?" Wei Yumeng couldn't understand. "I've seen our evidence before, wasn't it clear enough? The clearest evidence was that surveillance video."

Zhan Mohan shook his head. "It was precisely because of that video that the police reached this conclusion."

Wei Yumeng found it unbelievable. The police wouldn't collude with Catherine, so why did it lead to such a conclusion?

But regardless of the reason, Catherine had been released. Was that it?

"I just contacted the coffee shop to get the video from before and after, but I was told it had been deleted," Zhan Mohan frowned. It was clear that someone was exploiting loopholes in the video to exonerate Catherine.

Moreover, to prevent them from finding other clues, they deliberately had the coffee shop delete the video. Once the police reached a conclusion, it would be even harder to change everything.

However, there was still room for recovery in this situation. Since Kai had confessed everything in Catherine's place, Kai could be the key to unlocking everything.

Wei Yumeng looked at Zhan Mohan, and Zhan Mohan turned to look at her. It was clear that they were thinking along the same lines.

But they encountered a problem.

They weren't surprised that Kai would take the blame for Catherine. Because Kai was so devoted to Catherine, it was entirely reasonable for him to do such a thing.

But the more this was the case, the more difficult it became for them. Because Kai loved Catherine so deeply, it was even harder for them to get useful information from him.

This matter seemed to have reached a deadlock.

Wei Yumeng and Zhan Mohan fell into silence. The current situation seemed hopeless for them, unless Kai suddenly changed his mind, but the possibility was undoubtedly very low.

They believed that since Kai had made this decision, he was fully prepared, as this was a choice that would affect his entire life.

All they could do now was wait and see what Catherine would do next.

If Catherine learned her lesson after this incident, they couldn't do anything. But if Catherine deliberately courted disaster, then they wouldn't be polite.

Catherine returned home, a slight smile on her lips. She had known all along that Song Lijun wouldn't abandon her, and neither would Kai, so it wasn't hard for her to figure out that Song Lijun and Kai would ultimately choose this method.

Feng Zhenhua saw Catherine but didn't give her a good look. "Since you're back, stay put from now on. I've contacted a famous business school abroad. Once everything is ready, you'll go abroad to study. You can come back after all this is over."

"Dad, why do I have to go abroad? You saw it too, Kai did this, not me!"

Catherine felt that her conflict with Wei Yumeng wasn't over yet, so how could she leave?

Feng Zhenhua lost his temper in front of Catherine. "Enough! Do you really think we don't know who did those things?"
