Catherine breathed a sigh of relief, seeing that Kai seemed to have been fooled. But it didn't make her feel any better; her chest still felt heavy.
Even though she had been telling herself that spending a night with President Gu had at least earned her what she wanted in exchange for her body, seeing Kai made her realize that she couldn't possibly act as if nothing had happened.
She hadn't expected to pay such a price at the beginning.
"Linlin? How are you?" Kai asked, worried, noticing Catherine's troubled expression.
Catherine's face, a mix of amusement and distress, was terrible. She finally pushed Kai away.
"Go away. I want to be alone."
"Linlin, don't be like this. No matter what happens, you can tell me. I love you, and I can accept everything about you. Even if you did use me before, I only want you, no matter what kind of you."
"Enough!"
The more Kai spoke, the more Catherine's guilt grew. She had been lying to herself, telling herself it was just a transaction. But now, she was finding it harder to let go.
No matter what, she had lost the most important thing last night. But it was lost, and what could she do now?
She couldn't possibly tell Kai the truth, even if he said he could accept her no matter what.
Catherine didn't believe Kai would still say that if he knew the truth.
Kai was startled by Catherine's voice and fell silent, watching her.
"Don't follow me. I just want to be alone."
In the end, Kai could only watch Catherine's retreating figure. Could he still believe that nothing had happened?
"Linlin, you're back. You..."
Before Song Lijun could finish speaking, Catherine rushed back to her room and closed the door.
She leaned against the door, feeling drained. She had chosen all of this herself, so why wasn't she happy after the plan succeeded? Why did she have to encounter such things? Read X Sla
Catherine finally burst into tears, feeling that the world was so unfair. Wei Yumeng was with the person she loved, yet she had to do such a dirty deed for the position of president.
How did things escalate to this point?
She squatted on the ground, cradling her head, but President Gu's face kept appearing in her mind.
She also wanted to be with the person she loved, but now she had sacrificed the most important part of herself.
Finally, she reached a conclusion: wasn't Wei Yumeng the source of all this?
If Wei Yumeng hadn't existed, how would she have schemed to improve her position in this family? How would she have been so eager to take the presidential seat?
"Wei Yumeng, I won't let you off so easily."
Catherine clenched her fist, hatred for Wei Yumeng growing larger in her heart.
Song Lijun went to Catherine's door, looking worried. "Linlin, are you alright?"
After all, Catherine had looked so bad when she returned, it was natural to cause concern.
"Mom, I'm fine," Catherine said, opening the door. "I was just a bit tired, and my emotions got the better of me."
Song Lijun felt a pang of sympathy. After all, Catherine's depression hadn't fully recovered, so occasional outbursts didn't seem unusual.
"By the way, Mom, haven't we visited Yumeng in a while?"
Song Lijun paused slightly. Catherine had argued with her about this before, and it was because of this that Catherine had fallen into depression. But now, why the sudden change of heart?
"Mom, I know I was too wilful before. It was only because I was so jealous of you favoring Yumeng that I acted that way. But now, I feel that Yumeng is also my friend. Even if I knew she was ill, I would still be worried. So now I just want to see how she's doing."
Song Lijun nodded approvingly at Catherine. She even felt that Catherine thinking this way showed her heart had opened up. Since Catherine was so proactive, and she indeed hadn't seen Wei Yumeng for a few days.
Although Wei Yumeng and Zhan Mohan seemed to still hold a grudge against Catherine, she hoped this visit would provide an opportunity for them to talk things out and perhaps reconcile.
"Alright, since you've said so, we'll go together tomorrow. That way, I can make some preparations today."
Catherine said happily, "Then Mom, will you make chicken soup today too?"
Song Lijun nodded. "You've reminded me. I'll go make it right away."
Catherine watched Song Lijun's retreating back, a triumphant smile on her face.
Since Wei Yumeng had caused her so much trouble, how could she possibly let Wei Yumeng off easily?
However, it was still difficult for her to approach Wei Yumeng's home alone. But if she went with Song Lijun, it would be no problem at all.
The next day, Catherine and Song Lijun arrived at Wei Yumeng's home again.
Because Wei Yumeng and Zhan Mohan were both wary of Catherine, they didn't give her a warm welcome. However, they harbored no ill will towards Song Lijun.
"Mrs. Feng, you've arrived."
"Yumeng, this is the chicken soup I prepared, just like before. I realized I hadn't visited you in a while, so I wanted to ask how you're doing?"
Song Lijun spoke as she actively scooped a bowl for Wei Yumeng, but Wei Yumeng didn't drink it immediately.
"Mrs. Feng, thank you for your concern. I'm much better now. It's just that Mohan has been too worried, so I've been staying at home. Compared to me, Catherine's condition is more concerning."
As Wei Yumeng spoke, her gaze shifted to Catherine. Catherine looked to be in good spirits, showing no signs of a depressed patient.
Even if other events had occurred this week that improved Catherine's condition, the speed of recovery was still too fast.
Catherine took the initiative to explain, "Actually, my situation isn't that serious. It's just that I was stuck on some things, got into a rut, and now I've worked it all out."
Wei Yumeng smiled. "In that case, it's truly something to be happy about."
Although Wei Yumeng smiled, it was merely out of politeness. She still couldn't bring herself to like Catherine, let alone her suspicions about Catherine.
Catherine also smiled. She didn't show any unhappiness at Wei Yumeng's attitude, but her heart was already seething with resentment.
Song Lijun felt the atmosphere becoming awkward again and tried to mediate. "By the way, isn't today the weekend? Why don't I see the two children?"
