Chapter 860 This time, I definitely won't let her go

Though Song Lijun tried her best to comfort Catherine, Catherine’s agitated emotions remained uncalm, even resorting to using a small knife to cut her own wrist.

Just then, a bodyguard quietly approached Catherine from behind and knocked her unconscious temporarily, finally bringing the situation under control.

“My apologies, Madam. The situation was urgent just now, and this was the only method I could employ.”

The bodyguard was full of apologies, as he was not qualified to enter the room without the master’s explicit instruction.

Song Lijun, however, waved her hand. “It’s all thanks to you; otherwise, Linlin would be in serious trouble.”

Song Lijun gently placed Catherine back onto the bed in the room, her heart filled with mixed emotions. She was not the type of person who would blindly dote on her child. If she hadn’t witnessed certain things, how could she possibly speak ill of anyone?

At that time, she had merely intended to check on the chicken soup in the pot, only to see Catherine coming out of the kitchen. At that moment, she hadn’t thought much of it, assuming there was nothing wrong with Catherine entering her own home’s kitchen.

However, given the events that had transpired and Catherine’s previous actions towards Wei Yumeng, Song Lijun couldn’t help but entertain the worst possible thoughts. She now somewhat understood why Wei Yumeng had immediately sought them out.

But what should Song Lijun do now? Even though she had witnessed that scene, it didn’t directly prove that Catherine had poisoned the chicken soup.

Ultimately, Song Lijun gritted her teeth. If this matter was indeed Catherine’s doing, then all the evidence Zhan Mohan had gathered would seal Catherine’s fate for the rest of her life.

But if she stood by Catherine’s side, Wei Yumeng would surely be safe under Zhan Mohan’s protection, and Catherine would also be unharmed. This was the outcome she desired.

Moreover, there was currently no way to definitively prove that Catherine was responsible for everything.

Song Lijun gently caressed Catherine’s cheek. “That’s right, Linlin is still ill. Besides, she has changed so much at home recently. I should trust her now.”

Wei Yumeng and Zhan Mohan returned to the hospital together, silently keeping vigil by Zhan Shiqing’s bedside.

How could she not be angry? Yet, she currently had no proof that Catherine was responsible for the incident.

“Yumeng.”

Zhan Mohan was about to speak, but Wei Yumeng retorted irritably, “Why didn’t you directly use the previous evidence to hand Catherine over to the police just now?”

Zhan Mohan sighed. He knew that Wei Yumeng’s words were born of anger. She wasn't someone who would go back on her word. If he had directly used past incidents to hand Catherine over to the police at that time, Wei Yumeng would likely regret it later.

“I’ve already instructed Fang Xun to investigate the chicken soup. As long as there’s an issue with the chicken soup, we can directly hand Catherine over to the police. If we only used past events to turn Catherine in, how could it be considered giving the child justice?”

Wei Yumeng fell silent. She understood that Zhan Mohan’s words held merit. What she wanted more now was to seek justice for the child. The child was the most innocent party in all of this. She could give Catherine a chance regarding past incidents, but this time, she was determined to get to the bottom of things.

Zhan Mohan reached out and grasped Wei Yumeng’s clenched fist, slowly helping her to relax.

“The doctor just told me that the child has received treatment and will recover by tomorrow. Don’t worry too much.”

Wei Yumeng nodded slowly. Looking at Zhan Shiqing on the bed and then leaning into Zhan Mohan’s embrace, her emotions finally began to stabilize.

Fang Xun waited at the laboratory for an entire night before finally receiving the results.

“Mr. Fang, the results are out.”

Fang Xun, who had almost fallen asleep in the waiting room, jolted awake at the sound.

“What are the results?”

“The chicken soup did contain a toxic ingredient. However, according to our detailed examination, the ripeness of that ingredient does not match that of the chicken soup. It can be basically confirmed that someone added it later during the chicken soup’s preparation process.”

The lab technician said, handing Fang Xun a report detailing the chicken soup’s ingredients and harmful substances. Furthermore, based on the ripeness of the ingredients, they could infer the exact time the toxic ingredient was added to the pot.

This report settled all questions. As long as it was proven that the chicken soup was poisoned, Catherine could not escape accountability.

Fang Xun walked out of the laboratory and called Zhan Mohan.

“Mr. Zhan, the results are out. It has been proven that there is indeed an issue with the chicken soup. What should we do now?”

Zhan Mohan pondered for a moment, then asked, “Are there any developments regarding Kai?”

“Yes, we recently discovered that Kai has been trailing Mr. Gu.”

“Mr. Gu?” Zhan Mohan suddenly remembered, “Is it the same Mr. Gu who was secretly meeting with Catherine before?”

“That’s right. I suspect he has guessed that Catherine has some sort of relationship with Mr. Gu and is planning revenge.”

Zhan Mohan nodded, a faint smile playing on his lips. “That’s even better. It saves us the trouble of finding him. Have your people continue to follow Kai, but do not act rashly. However, if Kai makes any move towards Mr. Gu, apprehend him red-handed.”

“Understood, sir.”

Zhan Mohan hung up the phone, a plan gradually taking shape in his mind. Currently, both Kai and Catherine were only suspects. Even if the chicken soup was proven to be poisoned, as long as Catherine denied her involvement, they would still be unable to do anything to her. Therefore, he needed more concrete evidence.

Furthermore, Catherine and Kai were involved in more than just this one incident. Since they were going to settle the score, it was only right to settle all of it.

Wei Yumeng looked at Zhan Mohan with some confusion. “Was that Fang Xun’s call? Have the results for the chicken soup come out?”

Zhan Mohan shook his head. “Not yet. However, there are other findings from the investigation I initiated regarding Kai.”

Zhan Mohan recounted his earlier suspicions and the investigation findings to Wei Yumeng.

“It seems highly probable that Kai was involved in this matter. However, even if we bring Kai in, he won’t easily reveal the truth.”

Zhan Mohan nodded. “There is only one situation that would make him willingly tell the truth…”

As Zhan Mohan spoke, Wei Yumeng also realized, “Unless it involves Catherine’s safety.”

If all the events up to this point were carried out under Catherine’s command, then Kai’s feelings for Catherine were understandable. Moreover, he had already known that Catherine was using him, yet he continued to associate with her, which further illustrated Kai’s deep devotion to Catherine.

Although it might seem shameless to think this way, if they wanted to know everything now, they could only exploit Kai’s weakness and make him confess everything.

Wei Yumeng clenched her fist. “This time, I will not let her off.”
