Zhan’s family. Wei Yumeng sneezed unexpectedly, a coat was then thoughtfully draped over her shoulders, followed by a pair of warm hands.
“It’s windy outside. You were just discharged from the hospital not long ago. Be careful not to catch a cold.”
A magnetic voice floated gently from above Wei Yumeng’s head. Zhan Mohan had walked over to her side at some point, and they were now looking at the airplane soaring in the sky together.
“My nose just felt a bit itchy. Look at that plane.”
Wei Yumeng shook her head. She tilted her bright face up, her lustrous eyes gazing at the airplane. The clouds behind the plane formed a line, making it look like exhaust from a car.
However, for some reason, as she watched the plane, a peculiar feeling welled up in her heart—a sense of belonging, yet also a tinge of emptiness, like a child who didn't get any candy.
“I see it. This is a plane heading to Country Y.”
Zhan Mohan followed Wei Yumeng’s gaze, his eyes fixing on that spot. The blue sky above the Zhan family villa was vast, allowing them to clearly see the plane’s trajectory.
“Oh? It really is.”
Reminded by Zhan Mohan, Wei Yumeng noticed the letters on the plane’s wing. She smiled, and suddenly the figures of the Feng couple flashed in her mind.
She didn’t know anyone in Country Y except the Fengs, so it was natural to think of them.
Wei Yumeng was secretly surprised by the image in her mind. She reached up and tapped her forehead, sighing helplessly.
“What’s wrong?” Zhan Mohan acutely sensed Wei Yumeng’s rapidly declining mood. He lowered his eyes, his gaze now entirely focused on his beloved wife.
“Nothing. Whenever Country Y is mentioned, I think of the Feng couple… Oh right, their daughter, Catherine, too.”
Wei Yumeng directly voiced the people and things that came to her mind. She tilted her chin up, looking at Zhan Mohan.
Mentioning that overly enthusiastic family, Zhan Mohan unconsciously narrowed his long, dark eyes. Noticing Wei Yumeng’s gaze, he asked with a faint smile,
“Why did you think of them?”
“I don’t know. Perhaps because when Country Y is mentioned, they are the only ones I know. Miss Catherine also mentioned last time that her parents were returning, so maybe they are on this plane.”
Wei Yumeng shook her head with a chuckle. There were many unexplainable reasons in this world. For instance, why she thought of the Feng couple, or why her heart felt a little empty.
“It’s good they’re returning. I felt they were a bit too enthusiastic before. Although I’m not sure of their intentions, it’s still wise to remain guarded.”
Zhan Mohan mused for a moment before speaking to Wei Yumeng at a measured pace.
Fang Xun had also received news the day before yesterday. The people he had arranged at the hotel had found out that the Feng couple was returning to Country Y today. Upon hearing this, he had instructed Fang Xun to withdraw them.
“I know!”
Wei Yumeng helplessly rested her forehead. She had seen the fiery enthusiasm of that family long ago. While it was a little strange, now that they were gone, she wouldn’t have much interaction with Catherine.
The two of them leaned against each other, quietly watching the plane disappear into the sky. The lingering glow of the setting sun bathed them, emanating a warm radiance.
Meanwhile, as a sliver of the setting sun was drawing to a close, Xiao Mu had emerged from the tunnel.
The end of the tunnel opened into a patch of overgrown grass, untamed weeds growing waist-high.
Xiao Mu steadied himself and slowly crouched down. He observed carefully and noticed a small area of trampled grass at the mouth of the hole. There was even dried blood on the leaves.
“How is it? We didn’t find anything in the tunnel, so he should be outside,” Xiao Jin’s voice carried a hint of anxiety. He stared intently at the fully rendered 3D map on the screen, his brow furrowed.
The sun was about to set, and darkness was about to descend. While night was their cover, it would also make finding Wei Anguo more difficult.
“I’ve found signs of him coming out. There’s also blood on the nearby grass,” Xiao Mu scanned his surroundings. The environment was silent, and the gentle breeze rustled the grass, its sound remarkably clear.
“That’s strange. Wei Anguo was hit by both a flying dart and a bullet. It’s impossible for him to have survived and gotten out of here,” Xiao Jin rapidly typed on his keyboard as he traced the route. “Besides, this road is rarely traveled, so the chance of Wei Anguo being rescued is very small.”
As they spoke, the sun had completely sunk below the horizon, leaving only the faint glow of streetlights along the road.
“I’ll go check the road,” Xiao Mu wasn’t worried about not finding him. He knew Kai’s skills well; Wei Anguo must be nearby. “Where’s the boss?”
“He was just called back to the company by Miss.”
Xiao Jin awkwardly adjusted his wire-rimmed glasses. Miss calling him back likely meant she wanted to know the results. This was Kai’s first failure, and he wondered how Miss would punish him.
Kai must be feeling awful…
“No! Then I have to speed up my search. I’ll hang up now!”
Upon hearing that Kai had been summoned by Miss, Xiao Mu hurriedly hung up the phone. He fumbled with his flashlight, searching everywhere as he approached the road.
Just then, he spotted someone lying on the road not far away…
Meanwhile, at Kaiyue Corporation.
When Kai arrived at Catherine’s office, the woman was flipping through documents. The company was thriving, and her pressure was mounting.
The coffee on the corner of the desk had grown cold. Kai silently took it away. There was a red lipstick mark on the cup, and his expression flickered with a moment of awkwardness.
Kai poured a fresh cup of steaming hot coffee and gently placed it by Catherine’s hand. She had just finished signing the last document and stretched, letting out a sigh of relief.
“You’re here.”
Catherine’s tone was relaxed. She stood up, walked around, and leaned against her desk. Her eyes fixed on Kai, and she took a sip of coffee.
She didn’t ask for the results first because Kai had never failed.
Kai let out a soft hum and took a step back, maintaining the basic distance between them.
“The item?”
Catherine disliked Kai’s rigidness but said nothing. After all, what he wanted to do was his freedom, and she never interfered.
“Here.”
Kai produced the blood type booklet he had found on Wei Anguo and handed it to Catherine. The woman snatched it, her fingers inadvertently brushing his. Kai’s heart skipped a beat.
He watched Catherine examine the contents and, thinking of the item in his other pocket, suddenly frowned, internally wrestling with his indecision.
Catherine immediately spotted Gu Shuyi’s photograph. She frowned, disgusted, and after looking through it thoroughly, she let out a dismissive snort.
“I thought Wei Anguo had some real evidence. Just this?”
Catherine felt utterly speechless. She had specifically sent Kai to handle such a trivial matter.
“Oh, right. Was Wei Anguo dealt with properly?”
