Mu Linjing bit her lower lip. If Zhan Mohan intended to be a heartless man, she would be the first to not forgive him.
Zhan Mohan had been standing at the hospital room door. He really wanted to see how Wei Yumeng was, but a barrier remained in his heart. He kept telling himself that Wei Yumeng was not to blame for this matter, yet he couldn't let go easily.
What kind of attitude, what kind of expression should he use to face Wei Yumeng? He truly didn't know.
He didn't even know how he would interact with Wei Yumeng in the future.
He had countless times wanted to push open the door of the hospital room, but in the end, he withdrew his hand.
Mu Linjing had been accompanying Wei Yumeng, staying in the ward almost all the time except to use the restroom. She would occasionally help her move her limbs or wipe her face.
Finally, after being unconscious for more than half a day, Wei Yumeng woke up.
"Hiss..." Wei Yumeng tried to sit up, but accidentally touched her injured area and immediately lay back down.
"Don't move. If you want anything, need anything, I'll help you," Mu Linjing quickly went to the bedside.
Wei Yumeng looked around and realized she was in the hospital.
"Where am I..."
"You fainted after being rescued, so we brought you to the hospital. The doctor said it's nothing serious," Mu Linjing said, her face filled with sadness.
Wei Yumeng looked at Mu Linjing and smiled, "Don't blame yourself anymore. This was never your fault. Besides, I'm an adult and should be able to protect myself. By your logic, wouldn't I be the one most at fault?"
Mu Linjing held Wei Yumeng's hand, "But I knew your situation was dangerous, yet I failed to protect you. I truly feel awful, and even more so that you were injured."
"Right, what about that man now?" Wei Yumeng knew that if they continued talking, they would only go in circles on that topic. So, she decided to change the subject.
"He's been arrested. I don't know the specific details yet. I've been with you here since you were admitted to the hospital."
Wei Yumeng felt a sense of gratitude. She truly felt it was a blessing from three lifetimes to have become best friends with Mu Linjing.
"By the way, where is Mohan?"
Hearing Wei Yumeng mention Zhan Mohan, Mu Linjing paused slightly, then lowered her head, unsure of how to respond.
After sending Wei Yumeng to the hospital, Zhan Mohan hadn't entered the ward. He wasn't even at the hospital anymore.
She couldn't help but clench her fist, never expecting Zhan Mohan to be this kind of man.
But how could she tell Wei Yumeng the truth? Wei Yumeng was still recovering from her injuries. If she told her the truth now, it would only make her more upset.
"After he confirmed you were okay, he went to the police station to deal with that man's matter."
Mu Linjing casually made up an excuse. She couldn't tell Wei Yumeng the truth yet.
Wei Yumeng lowered her head. She wasn't entirely in the dark. She could understand how a man would feel upon hearing his wife had been violated. However, she had not been assaulted. This was something she had to tell Zhan Mohan.
"Alright, now that you're awake, is there anything you want to eat or drink? I'll go buy it for you."
Wei Yumeng looked up at Mu Linjing. She also felt she had already caused Mu Linjing enough trouble, so she couldn't let her worry any further.
"Then I want a hamburger and fries!"
Mu Linjing immediately objected, "You're injured now, how can you eat such things?"
Wei Yumeng smiled, "Then I'll listen to you."
Mu Linjing nodded, stood up, picked up her bag, and prepared to leave, "Stay here obediently, I'll be back soon."
Watching Mu Linjing leave in a hurry, Wei Yumeng showed a gentle smile on her face.
No matter when, Mu Linjing always treated her so sincerely, making her feel constantly cared for and cherished. Thinking about it this way, she felt even more indebted to Mu Linjing.
Wei Yumeng lay on the bed, trying hard to figure out how to explain this to Zhan Mohan. She knew very well she hadn't been defiled, but that man had gone to the police for taking the blame. It was truly puzzling.
What was it that made him willing to trade his freedom for it?
Just then, a figure appeared on the window of the ward door.
"Who's there?" Wei Yumeng was startled.
The figure paused slightly but said nothing.
Wei Yumeng looked at the height and build, and finally made a guess.
"Is it Mohan?"
The shadow still didn't speak, just stood silently at the door.
"Mohan, I know you must be very upset right now, but I can assure you, I was truly not forced upon by that man."
Wei Yumeng's tone was firm. Since Zhan Mohan couldn't see her expression, she could only convey her feelings to him in this way.
Finally, Zhan Mohan spoke, "You should rest well first. Don't think about anything. I will handle it."
Ultimately, Zhan Mohan did not come in. The figure soon disappeared from the doorway.
Wei Yumeng clenched her fist. Zhan Mohan's refusal to enter and see her clearly indicated his lingering concern about the incident. Perhaps in the eyes of others, her words now sounded like self-denial after trauma, a deliberate refusal to believe what had happened.
But what she said was the truth. How could she make Zhan Mohan believe everything?
Finally, tears of grievance fell from Wei Yumeng's eyes. She was heartbroken that Zhan Mohan didn't believe her. What would she do in the future?
Zhan Mohan left the hospital, feeling stifled. It wasn't that he didn't want to see Wei Yumeng; he missed her terribly, almost to the point of madness, but he simply didn't know how to face her.
Wei Yumeng's tone earlier was very sincere, but the doctor had told him that it was normal for Wei Yumeng to have post-traumatic stress disorder. Furthermore, the man's case had essentially been settled after the police investigation.
He didn't believe the man would sacrifice himself just to frame Wei Yumeng.
But who could tell him now what the right course of action was?
Should he continue living as before? But how could he pretend nothing had happened? Unless he had amnesia.
Even though things had reached this point, he would not let the mastermind behind all of this go.
Catherine's accurate disclosure of Wei Yumeng's whereabouts was enough to prove her involvement in this matter. No matter what, Catherine could not be let off the hook.
Zhan Mohan called Fang Xun in China, "Keep a close eye on Catherine for me. Record her every move before I return."
Fang Xun, hearing Zhan Mohan's voice, knew that something must have happened, but it wasn't his place to ask.
So, he simply replied, "Understood."
