Chapter 1460 The Mastermind is a Child

Following the clues, Zhan Mohan and Wei Yumeng arrived at the doorstep of the person who had allegedly borrowed the car.

However, the situation was entirely different from what they had imagined.

Wei Yumeng had initially thought that someone who befriended the previous individual would likely come from a decent family background.

Yet, in reality, this was a remarkably ordinary, even impoverished, household.

This presented them with a dilemma: if this family were indeed responsible for hitting the child, what motive would they have? They would gain nothing from such an act and could even face legal repercussions. Would they truly choose to do such a thing?

Conversely, if this family were not the masterminds behind the incident, then all the pieces would fall into place.

Wei Yumeng stepped forward and knocked on the door. It took a while before someone answered.

"May I ask if this is Mr. Shen Han's residence?" Wei Yumeng inquired.

The woman glanced at Wei Yumeng, then at Zhan Mohan. "This is indeed his home, but my husband is not here at the moment. May I ask why you are looking for him?"

Wei Yumeng then explained, "Madam Shen, we are employees of Zhan Group. Mr. Shen Han worked for us as a temporary worker before, and our president was very satisfied with his performance, so we wanted to bring him back."

Mrs. Shen did not doubt Wei Yumeng's words and even seemed a little pleased. "Zhan Group, that famous big company? He never told me he ran errands there."

Wei Yumeng glanced at Zhan Mohan, who nodded slightly.

Based on Mrs. Shen's demeanor, she seemed completely unaware of the car accident or, at least, did not believe it could be connected to their family. Otherwise, she would have reacted differently upon hearing the name Zhan Group.

However, the woman showed no signs of pretense.

"Ah, yes, please, both of you, come in and have a seat," Mrs. Shen said, opening the door wider to let Wei Yumeng and Zhan Mohan enter.

As soon as they stepped inside, Wei Yumeng detected a strong medicinal smell.

"Please don't mind us, both bosses. Our child has been ill since birth, and now almost everything relies on these medications to sustain his life," she explained, sighing. "Shen Han works so hard all for our child and this family."

Wei Yumeng and Zhan Mohan had originally intended to investigate the hit-and-run incident, but upon witnessing this scene, they found themselves reluctant to bring it up.

While they couldn't be entirely certain that Shen Han was the hit-and-run driver, even if he had done such a thing, his family was unaware.

How heartbroken would they be if they found out.

Therefore, Wei Yumeng and Zhan Mohan did not linger. They sat for a short while and then left.

Before departing, however, Zhan Mohan arranged for several bodyguards to keep watch. The moment Shen Han returned, he was to be brought to Zhan Group immediately.

"Mohan, I don't think this Shen Han is the mastermind behind this. Based on our current observations, it's highly likely he did it for money," Wei Yumeng commented.

She felt that their family's situation was truly pitiable, especially with such a young child suffering from a serious illness.

However, even so, this did not mean Wei Yumeng would forgive his actions towards Zhan Jinzhi.

Furthermore, Zhan Jinzhi had still not woken up.

The thought brought a pang of pain to Wei Yumeng's heart.

Zhan Mohan immediately took her hand, offering comfort.

For the next few days, Wei Yumeng remained at the hospital, keeping vigil over Zhan Jinzhi.

Since Shen Han was their only lead, all she could do was wait.

"Mom, when will big brother wake up?" Zhan Shiqing asked, looking at Zhan Jinzhi with a distressed expression.

She was not unaware of Zhan Jinzhi's condition, but wasn't she also waiting for a miracle?

"He will wake up. He will definitely wake up," Wei Yumeng assured her. She glanced at the time. "Alright, it's getting late. You have school tomorrow, so Uncle Fang Xun should take you home now."

Saying this, she took Zhan Shiqing's hand and led her out of the ward.

However, the moment she left, Zhan Jinzhi, who had been unconscious, stirred. His hand moved.

"Madam," Fang Xun said to Wei Yumeng, looking somewhat excited. "I was just looking for you. We've found Shen Han."

Upon hearing this news, Wei Yumeng could wait no longer. She asked Fang Xun to take Zhan Shiqing home, while she herself rushed to Zhan Group.

"Shen Han, we've investigated and found that you were driving the vehicle that caused the accident on the day it happened, is that correct?" Zhan Mohan asked, his aura exceptionally stern.

Shen Han seemed to want to say something, but as he opened his mouth, no words came out.

Wei Yumeng stepped forward. "Mr. Shen, we've actually visited your home and understand your family's situation. You should be well aware of Zhan Group's capabilities. If we were to help your child, I believe he would recover soon."

Indeed, upon hearing this, Shen Han wavered. "I... I actually... I can confess, and I can tell you everything I know, as long as you promise to save my child."

Zhan Mohan scoffed. "I don't think you are in any position to negotiate terms with us. If we want to know the truth, we can find it through other means. But you only have one chance. Tell us everything, and we might still be able to help you."

Shen Han thought for a moment, then sighed. "I am truly sorry for what I did. I... I only agreed to that person because of my child. I regret it more than words can express now."

As Shen Han spoke, he covered his face in shame.

"Since you say you were instructed to do this, do you know who that person is?" For Wei Yumeng, this was the most crucial question.

"I don't know the specific name. I only know his surname is Huang, and he seemed to be working for some young master in his family," Shen Han replied. "I only heard him call someone 'young master' on the phone. I also overheard the other person seemed to be participating in some program, with a host's voice and people urging them to go on stage."

Wei Yumeng was taken aback. Could the mastermind behind this be one of the participants in that program? And being called "young master" could imply a child of the same age as Zhan Jinzhi.

The thought sent a chill down Wei Yumeng's spine. If this were the case, the perpetrator might just be a child.

She considered how Shen Han's child was gravely ill and survived only on medication, while Zhan Jinzhi was currently in a coma in the hospital. And yet, such a child could, for some reason, commit such a horrific act.
