Chapter 246: 226 hit the wrong person

During a brief pause in the gunfight, Jimmy swapped in a spare Glock magazine and shouted, "You okay? Got hit?"

Jones replied, "I'm fine, not hurt," and then fell silent again.

Jimmy watched the enemy at the opposite wall corner, the distance was now close to Heart Eye's limit. With prolonged use, Heart Eye's range had improved from around 15 meters back when he was with the county police to more than 20 meters. Jimmy had pondered this issue, and it was most likely related to the white spot he noticed while watching the Priest perform an exorcism; it seemed that since then, Heart Eye had upgraded because the visible distance had grown faster in the past six months than before.

The problem now was that if the gunmen moved away from the wall corner, Jimmy wouldn't be able to see them anymore and would have to change positions; the best spot was actually near the barrier on Jones's side.

Jimmy made sure none of the enemies at the corner were watching his direction, bent at the waist, and slowly ran towards Jones. Fortunately, the warehouse door's light couldn't reach their position, the darkness covered Jimmy, allowing him to make it to Jones's side successfully.

The fact that the gunmen didn't have night vision was good, if they had, Jimmy would have been 'dead' several times over already.

Jimmy asked Jones, "All good?"

Jones turned his head towards the gunman's corner and said, "No problem, but we can't see them at all now, we need to adjust our positions."

Jimmy pointed in the opposite direction of the gunmen and said, "Right, I'll go over there to keep watch first, once it's clear, you follow. If they appear, suppress them immediately."

Jones replied, "Go ahead."

After changing angles, Jimmy could vaguely make out the specific movements of the people opposite. Although the gunmen were by the wall corner, Jimmy could see them from the darkness, and there was some light leaking from the warehouse door nearby—not shining directly, but still providing a slight view.

Jimmy observed them first; they were checking a few people on the ground. Taking advantage of the ceasefire, those on the ground had crawled to the corner, leaving one body still and unmoving. Due to the distance being over a dozen meters, he could only hear their voices speaking quietly but couldn't make out the words.

Jimmy drew his revolver and took six spare rounds from the holster strap to reload, and now that he was wearing a suit all day, he only had six rounds in the chamber and six on the strap, no extra ammunition for the revolver, though he did have a good supply of Glock rounds. After getting ready, Jimmy stepped back a bit and carefully moved toward the gunmen's position.

Only one person was standing guard at the corner, judging by their silhouette they were watching Jones's hiding spot—this was a positive sign.

When he was at the gunmen's side, Jimmy opened fire first, this time he did not intend to hold back. With only four people standing, starting with the one on guard, Jimmy took 2 seconds to aim, fired the revolver dry, then switched to his left hand Glock and fired repeatedly at those who were crouched or lying down. Unable to distinguish from their silhouettes who was alive and who was dead, he decided it was safest to treat them all equally.

Jimmy's surprise attack was too swift; the remaining four gunmen had no chance to retaliate before they were all shot. As a result, there were only a few shots from their side before silence fell.

Having emptied all his ammunition, Jimmy scanned the scene until all the people were confirmed down, then he called out to Jones, "It's safe, everyone's down, Jones, you can come over now."

Upon hearing Jimmy's call, Jones ran straight over, "WTF! What did you just do?"

Scanning the scene, Jones quickly used his phone to call Peter, "Peter, there's been an incident. During recce, the warehouse, we were discovered and a gunfight ensued. Currently, all nine gunmen are down; whether they're dead is yet to be confirmed."

Jones continued, "Yeah, we're fine, we need someone to secure the scene and call an ambulance."

Jones said, "Alright, we'll wait for backup here."

After hanging up, Jones revealed to Jimmy, "Peter is calling for support, he'll be on his way soon, let's just wait here for a bit."

Jimmy replied, "OK, by the way, got a spare mag? I'm out of ammo."

Jones took a magazine from his quick-draw holster and gave it to Jimmy since they used the same primary weapons.

After loading the new magazine into his Glock, Jimmy felt a surge of relief. While he was a cop, he almost never used up two magazines, usually one cylinder was enough, so he'd grown accustomed to carrying only twelve rounds, two cylinders' worth. Now, caught in a moderately intense battle, he'd run dry of ammo for both the revolver and Glock; he would've been out of luck if something else had happened.

While waiting for the police and ambulance, Jimmy and Jones checked the people on the ground to confirm they were all dead, then they proceeded to inspect the warehouse. Upon seeing what was inside, both their heads ached—shit, they'd hit the wrong target.

NYPD and the ambulance arrived quickly; a few minutes later, two police cars were in position and ten minutes after that the first ambulance arrived.

Jones spoke with NYPD, as they set up a cordon and illuminated the scene with police car headlights to ensure the area was well-lit.

At the ambulance, a cursory check of the gunmen sufficed to pronounce them deceased, but as FBI forensic personnel hadn't arrived yet, the bodies had to remain in place awaiting removal.

Peter arrived at the scene nearly an hour later; the FBI forensics team was already there, registering the scene and collecting evidence.
