The three of them crossed the bridge, and Yunyi parted ways with Geng Erhong and Cheng Hongjun.
When she arrived at her doorstep, she saw Liu Chenglin standing at the edge of his private plot, still holding freshly picked vegetables.
Seeing her approach, Liu Chenglin said softly, "Chu Zhiqing, please go over and check on him again. Someone will come later to pick him up and take him away."
Yunyi nodded at him. "Okay, I’ll head over after I get the meal started."
She entered the courtyard and first took a basket to her private plot to pick some vegetables. After returning, she washed the rice and started it cooking. Then, grabbing her medical kit, she went next door.
Liu Chenglin was already waiting in the courtyard. As they went straight into the house, Yunyi said, "Comrade, let me check your wound."
The man on the bed cooperated by lifting his shirt. "Comrade Chu, my name is Qi Kaiwu. Thank you for saving me."
As Yunyi checked him, she replied, "If you want to thank anyone, thank yourself for your strong willpower. And, of course, thank the comrades who got you out of the mountains immediately—each one of them was indispensable."
He had lost so much blood. With such severe injuries, it would have been incredibly difficult to survive the journey out of the mountains without a strong physique and iron willpower.
Qi Kaiwu smiled. "Comrade Chu, you’ve attributed all the credit to me and my comrades-in-arms. But if it weren’t for you that day, I’m afraid I wouldn’t have made it to the commune health clinic."
Yunyi quickly checked him and changed his dressing. "That just proves you were lucky, and it wasn’t your time to go."
After packing up her things, she turned to Liu Chenglin, who was standing nearby. "The wound isn’t infected. I’ve redressed it, so he can travel safely."
Liu Chenglin looked at Qi Kaiwu on the bed. "The comrade coming to fetch you will be here soon."
Qi Kaiwu nodded to show he understood.
His superior had mentioned when he left that day that someone would be sent to take him back to the military hospital. After all, he couldn’t risk being seen publicly. "Comrade Chu," Qi Kaiwu continued, "I, Qi Kaiwu, will always remember your life-saving kindness. If there’s ever anything you need from me, please don’t hesitate."
With that, he handed over a piece of paper with his contact information, which he had prepared in advance.
Yunyi didn’t refuse. Who could say what the future held? Besides, accepting it would set Comrade Qi Kaiwu’s mind at ease.
She didn’t linger and, after giving a few instructions, she left.
Returning to her small courtyard, she quickly prepared the meal. She still had matters to attend to and planned to act after eating.

The Qiu widow had finished cooking, but her son had not yet returned, so she called into the house, "Baojuan, go out and look for your brother. Why hasn’t he come back yet?"
