Chapter 72: Chapter 72 Can This Joke Be Made Casually?
Bai Suli couldn’t take it anymore. "I just wanted to play a joke on her! Why did she hit me?"
Yunyi stepped forward a few paces. "Play a joke? You really dare say that. Do you think what you just said is something to joke about?"
Bai Suli was furious and retorted, "We’re educated youths who came to the countryside together. Isn’t it okay to joke around with each other?"
Yunyi’s lips curled up as she casually remarked, "I saw you sneaking into the cornfield with a man from the village last night."
No one expected Yunyi to make such a comment. Bai Suli gnashed her teeth and growled, "Chuyunyi, I didn’t even leave the Zhiqing Point last night! Don’t slander me!"
Yunyi laughed. Her laugh was so dazzling it nearly blinded the onlookers; she was simply too beautiful. But she quickly suppressed her smile and said with a nonchalant cynicism, "Why the rush? I’m just joking with you."
Bai Suli angrily protested, "Can you joke about anything you please?"
Yunyi looked at her with scorn. "You really have double standards. If you dare to spout nonsense again, it won’t be settled with just a kick. I’ll definitely let you experience what it means to get a taste of your own medicine."
After speaking, her gaze swept over those who had been gossiping.
Her eyes fell on the woman who had tried to force a match. "I don’t like to cause trouble, but I’m not afraid of it either. I don’t care if your family has been poor for eight generations or if you’re descended from grasping landlords—just don’t set your sights on me. Otherwise, I’ll make sure you and your family understand why flowers are so red."
They didn’t understand what "why flowers are so red" meant, but they knew it wasn’t anything good.
The intimidating aura emanating from Yunyi silenced everyone present. For a moment, nobody dared to speak up.
She turned to the Branch Secretary. "My apologies, Branch Secretary, for the delay." Then she walked back to Geng Erhong’s side, her expression calm, as if nothing had happened.
This left the crowd staring dumbfounded. No one had expected her to resolve the issue single-handedly, without needing any mediation.
Whether it was the person sprawled on the ground or Bao Ping’s wife—who had never lost an argument or backed down in the village—everyone was scared into silence.
The Branch Secretary scanned the crowd and cleared his throat. "From now on, if anyone can’t control their tongue and gets beaten up for spouting nonsense, don’t come to me to plead your case. You’ll have deserved it."
For the past few days, team leader Xu Wenchang had been away. The Branch Secretary was left to handle everything alone, busy from dawn till dusk, dealing with one problem after another.
Seeing it was getting late, he stepped onto a large rock beneath the willow tree. "Today, we’ll still be fertilizing the cornfields. Work in groups of three, and line up at the warehouse to collect tools and fertilizer powder."
Yunyi, Geng Erhong, and Liu Chenglin were assigned to a group.
Liu Chenglin took the lead, digging holes with a mattock. Geng Erhong held a basin, tossing fertilizer into the holes, while Yunyi followed with a hoe, covering them with soil.
Liu Chenglin was initially a bit unaccustomed to it, but he was a quick learner and soon grasped the technique. Geng Erhong’s task was simple enough.
However, the fertilizer powder was uncomfortable on the hands, and carrying the basin at waist level for a long time was tough on the waist and arms.
This fieldwork was truly not an easy job. The corn towered over their heads, and the heat trapped among the stalks made them sweat profusely. Moreover, the corn leaves scratched their faces, making their skin feel prickly all over.
Fortunately, Yunyi was considerate. She and Geng Erhong alternated their tasks, and they just managed to finish their assignment by the end of the workday.
