Grass grows and orioles fly

Chapter 38 Preparing to Clear the Zombies

The night was deep, and the zombies' roars had already reached the sixteenth floor. They were constantly foraging, and everything alive was on their menu.

On the rooftop, illuminated by the light of two solar night lamps, two figures were sparring. Every punch they threw was powerful, aimed at vital points.

"Crack!"

"Damn it, Old Wu, you're cheating!" One of the figures fell to the ground, groaning in pain while clutching his lower body.

Seeing Lin Yuan sprawled on the ground, Wu Tian also breathed a sigh of relief. Fighting him was becoming increasingly difficult; this person's talent was simply too extraordinary.

After the signal was interrupted, Lin Yuan and his companions cleared the remaining few zombies on floors 11-16 of two buildings, and then began training with single-minded focus. Every morning, afternoon, and evening, they were on the rooftop, training their cardiopulmonary function, strength, combat skills, cold weapons, and combat coordination.

They also dedicated some time each day to crafting their own weapons, such as chevaux de frise and wooden spears.

This training regimen lasted for three days. Thanks to the regenerative abilities bestowed by the fungal spores, their training intensity increased steadily each day, their mutual understanding grew, and their strength improved.

Wu Tian felt her own improvement was within a normal range, but Lin Yuan astonished her. Perhaps heaven had truly bestowed him with unparalleled talent and adaptability; his strength increase was explosive.

His strength had nearly tripled, allowing him to lift Wu Tian, who weighed 120 jin, with one hand. His reaction speed had also significantly improved. He no longer closed his eyes during combat; instead, his actions were replaced by calmness and calculation. In terms of combat skills, he not only recalled the basics of Sanda he learned in college but also mastered various techniques. While not yet proficient, he could be considered skilled.

By now, her win rate against Lin Yuan had dropped to only forty percent.

"Alright, you've got it. You don't even know how strong you are now. Do you think I can win without using underhanded tactics?" Wu Tian took off her protective gear and sat down to rest.

This was newly sewn by Wu Mengyao, with a lot of added padding.

"Hiss, it really hurts. Even though my strength has increased so much, the vital points haven't changed at all," Lin Yuan gritted his teeth and moved next to Wu Tian, taking large gulps from a bottle of water.

He could also clearly feel that he had become much stronger, and in an unreasonable way. But with the apocalypse having arrived, what else was impossible?

It had been five days since they started training. During this time, their appetites had also grown, and only today had they slightly decreased. Their weight had also increased significantly, but their physique had not changed much. The increase was in muscle mass, muscle density, and bone density.

Therefore, from the outside, they both only appeared to be full of power, not like bodybuilders.

The moon was bright and the stars were sparse in the sky. Tomorrow would be another sunny day.

Gazing at the sky, Lin Yuan suddenly mused, "I never thought I'd be seeing the night sky like this in the city, something I could only see back in my hometown."

"Yes, even the air has become much cleaner," Wu Tian said after a moment of reflection, then got down to business. "Today, Mengyao discovered that many zombies in the residential area have mutated, all developing in the direction of fungal monsters. Should we start a clearing operation tomorrow?"

Just as he was about to agree, he thought of Wu Mengyao and said, "The day after tomorrow. We still need Mengyao to sew clothes for us tomorrow; she hasn't finished yet. And tomorrow, we'll test the results of our training to see if we've improved as much as these past few days, and then make other preparations before we start."

Wu Tian also considered, "That's fine. It's not too late to make a plan before acting. Let's go back now and rest well to discuss it tomorrow."

It was already 11:13 PM. It was time to rest. Maintaining good energy was crucial for survival in the apocalypse.

At the entrance of their homes, after saying goodnight to each other, Wu Tian called out to him, "Hey, wait."

Lin Yuan turned back with a bewildered look, "What's up?"

Seeing his expression, Wu Tian felt like hitting him. What a blockhead!

After some hesitation, she finally said, "Never mind, it's nothing."

Lin Yuan: ...

"Alright, then I'll go to sleep."

It was already very dark. After midnight, the zombies' activity would become more frequent, so they had to go to bed early.

Back home, he drew all the curtains and, using the last bit of power from the solar night lamp, Lin Yuan wrote down his plan for the day after tomorrow.

They had not missed a single broadcast over the past three days, listening in on time every day.

Over the past three days, the rescue operations in the major safe zones had largely concluded, with only a few areas still in a stalemate. The transfer of supplies was proceeding smoothly, and there were no major issues. The next step was a fifteen-day period of production and development.

The national bio-research group had not made any particularly astonishing research breakthroughs, merely mentioning that mutated beings like "fungal monsters" and "nightmares" were within a range of 100 meters.

There were quite a few zombies in the residential area, especially in the central garden, which was shaded and where many middle-aged and elderly people liked to play chess and cards.

If the commotion was too great, it could cause a chain reaction, so they had to proceed with caution.

For this clearing operation, Lin Yuan planned to use Wang Xiaoxin's method of using obstacles like chevaux de frise to block the stairwells. This method was invincible as long as they didn't face more than five zombies at a time. If there were more than five, zombies might pounce over their companions.

However, Lin Yuan's mindset was quite good. With his enhanced strength and abnormal recovery ability, plus Wu Tian, a bow-wielding archer capable of close combat, as long as they didn't encounter nightmare-level mutated creatures, they were sure to win.

But these were just words. They would find out for real the day after tomorrow.

The next morning, Lin Yuan was already on the rooftop. He took advantage of this time to build the rainproof shed over the stove. Over the past three days, he had nailed a few wooden strips whenever he had free time. Now, only the fabric for the rain cover was left to be attached. Lin Yuan completed it in less than fifteen minutes.

"Lin Yuan, you're up so early?!" As soon as the shed was finished and he was boiling water to cook noodles, Wu Tian's voice rang out.

"I got up early to finish this shed. It's been sunny for so many days; it should rain in a couple of days. It's better to be prepared."

He threw the noodles into the pot and looked around Wu Tian. Not seeing Wu Mengyao, he asked, "Where's Mengyao? Isn't she with you?"

"No, she dove straight to the sewing machine as soon as she woke up. She said she's almost done. What about you, what are your plans for today?"

Lin Yuan pulled the finished chevaux de frise and patted it:

"It's all thanks to this today!"
