Chapter 319: Chapter 127 Lu Min_3

What did he see?

Lu Tong instinctively wanted to look back, but as she moved, Pei Yunmeng held her shoulder, not waiting for her to react. A shadow enveloped them, and Lu Tong’s cheek touched his cool garment.

Pei Yunmeng stood in front of her.

The passing crowd did not glance their way more than once, as during the Lantern Festival, there are plenty of lovers strolling at night.

Lu Tong was almost entirely wrapped in his shadow, her head against his chest, at an intimate distance where she seemed to hear his soft yet strong heartbeat, beating one after another.

It was exceptionally clear amidst the surging tide of people.

After an unknown amount of time, the hand pressing on her eased a little.

He let go of Lu Tong.

"Whom did you see just now?" Lu Tong turned to look behind her, but the side was full of Flower Street’s visitors, revealing nothing suspicious.

Pei Yunmeng’s abrupt actions were likely because he saw someone else. The moment he pulled Lu Tong in front of him, she did not miss the coldness in the bottom of Pei Yunmeng’s eyes.

"Someone you would not want to see," Pei Yunmeng said with an unconcerned smile.

He did not answer Lu Tong’s question.

Lu Tong pursed her lips, not liking the feeling of being kept in the dark.

Probably sensing her unease, Pei Yunmeng stepped back, lowered his head to look at her, and suddenly said, "Doctor Lu."

"What is it?"

"The Qi Family is investigating you."

Lu Tong’s expression flickered, staring at him without speaking.

"They’ve only traced Lu Rou, not you yet," he said in a casual tone, as if offhandedly reminding her. "But if this continues, there’s no guarantee you won’t be exposed."

With that, Lu Tong understood.

The people from the Grand Preceptor’s Mansion might suspect the Lu Family, even the long-missing "Lu Min," but they would not suspect her, Lu Tong, for the time being.

Simply because, nominally, Lu Tong was just a commoner female doctor from out of town, the Resident Doctor at the Renxin Medical Hall, with no connection to the Lu Family of Changwu County.

But if she were to take revenge, once she approached Qi Yutai, her identity would be exposed sooner or later.

Pei Yunmeng was reminding her of this.

"I understand," Lu Tong said. "Has the Qi Family made any other moves?"

Pei Yunmeng raised an eyebrow, stared at her for a long while, and seeing her expression open and honest, finally spoke with a hint of amusement, "Now, you’re not even pretending in front of me, are you giving up altogether?"

She was so brazenly asking him for information, with no attempt to conceal it.

"Didn’t Lord Pei say we were on the same side?"

"Not anymore."

Lu Tong scoffed inwardly.

When he didn’t know her identity, he insisted on staying at the medical hall despite his injuries, constantly reminding her they were "on the same side." Now that he knew she had come for revenge, he seemed eager to distance himself immediately as not to attract trouble.

The son of a powerful and noble family, always savvy in weighing pros and cons.

While she was sneering inwardly, a familiar voice came from afar, "Miss! Miss!"

Lu Tong turned to look and saw at the other end of the crowd, Yin Zheng standing in front of the theater pavilion, waving at her energetically. Upon seeing her, Yin Zheng smiled, lifted her skirts, and started making her way through the crowd towards her.

They were already close to the theater pavilion. It seemed that Yin Zheng and the others had realized they had become separated from her and had specifically come here to wait for her.

"Your friend has arrived," Pei Yunmeng noticed Yin Zheng as well.

Lu Tong faced him, it was time for him to leave.

His gaze lingered on the Toad Lamp in Lu Tong’s hand for a moment, then moved to her face, before he finally said, "I wish Doctor Lu every success in the spring examination in March."

Lu Tong nodded, "Thank you for your kind words."

Pei Yunmeng said nothing more and left. After a few steps, however, he stopped and called out to Lu Tong.

Lu Tong asked, "Does Lord Pei have anything else to say?"

He was silent for a moment before speaking in a subdued voice, "There will be more dangers in the future."

"Doctor Lu," he said, "be careful."

The man’s figure disappeared into the moving throng of people, and Lu Tong stood in the glow of the hanging lamps until a voice rang out beside her, "Miss, I’ve finally found you!"

Yin Zheng managed to push through the crowd to Lu Tong’s side, patting her chest with relief, "Ah Cheng finished buying the rice dumplings, and when we turned around and you were gone, it gave me quite a scare. Shopkeeper Du said you would be waiting for us near the theater pavilion, and I didn’t believe him, but luckily he was right." After speaking, she stared curiously at the Toad Lamp in Lu Tong’s hand, "Where did this lamp come from? Miss, you didn’t bring any silver..."

"Someone gave it to me," Lu Tong lowered her head and touched the toad’s head. The green toad’s mouth was so wide open that it looked comically ridiculous.

"Oh," Yin Zheng seemed to take it at face value, nodding and looking around a bit more.
