Chapter 84: System Update
As they continued through the Hall, Jack noticed the subtle ways other gods observed their passage.
Some showed mild curiosity about the mortal in their midst, while others displayed obvious contempt for non-divine presence in their sacred space.
They passed groups of gods engaged in various forms of business. Negotiations over which pantheons would influence specific worlds, debates about where resources should go and the casual discussions of mortal affairs that would reshape entire civilizations.
"It’s overwhelming," Jack admitted, watching a group of gods argue with what appeared to be deities from some technological pantheon about mining rights on uninhabited planets.
"It should be," Draven replied without attempting to minimize the scope of what Jack was witnessing. "You’re seeing the machinery that drives reality itself, the decision-making processes that determine the fate of countless mortal realms."
The storm god paused beside a floating island where several neutral gods were examining what looked like cosmic maps covered in swirling energy patterns. "And soon, whether you want it or not, you’ll become part of these discussions. Your growing power will force other gods to take positions regarding your existence."
"What kind of positions?"
"Some will want to ally with you, others will want to control you, and many will simply want you eliminated before you become a threat to their own agendas," Draven said with brutal honesty. "The prophecy of the white lightning child has been known in divine circles for millennia. Every god has contingency plans for when that prophecy finally manifests."
Jack felt the weight of cosmic attention pressing down on him like a physical force. "And you think I’m ready for that kind of attention?"
"Ready or not, it’s coming," Draven replied grimly.
Deep within the territory of the dark faction, something stirred with sudden interest. A presence that had been observing their conversation from afar suddenly focused with laser intensity on the young mortal walking beside the storm god.
The entity moved closer to the boundary between dark and neutral territory, remaining hidden within the writhing shadows while studying Jack.
Here was something unexpected.
The dark god’s attention sharpened as it analyzed Jack’s aura.
A slow, predatory smile spread across features hidden within the shadows. This mortal would require careful observation, strategic manipulation, and eventual recruitment.
"It’s been a while since I smelled that. It’s always so overwhelming." The god reached his hand out aiming for Jack.
Before he could get his hands into neutral territory, a bolt of thunder came down and struck his hand.
"Ahhh, you old fool. He won’t be yours forever." He said grimly as he smiled wider than what should habe been possible.
--
Thud!
Jack’s consciousness slammed back into his physical body like a thunderbolt striking earth. The transition from Draven’s ethereal domain to mortal flesh was jarring, violent, and absolutely overwhelming.
His knees hit the temple floor with bone-jarring force, sending shockwaves of pain up his spine while his hands scraped against rough stone as he struggled to maintain balance.
The sacred chamber spun around him like a carnival ride gone mad, reality reasserting itself with merciless intensity.
Air burned his lungs as Jack fought to remember how breathing worked. His chest heaved with desperate gulps while spots danced across his vision like malevolent fireflies. The transition between divine and mortal realms had left his nervous system completely scrambled.
"Jack!" Sera’s voice cut through the haze. "Stay conscious, boy. You’re back in the mortal realm now."
Through blurred vision, Jack could see Priestess Lyanna approaching with measured steps, her white robes rustling softly against the marble floor.
The cultists hung back at a respectful distance, their faces masks of religious fervor mixed with obvious curiosity about what their "Divine Avatar" had experienced.
The sounds of the temple seemed impossibly loud after the cosmic silence of the Hall of Eternals. Every footstep echoed like thunder, every whispered prayer rang like cathedral bells, every breath sounded like wind through mountain caves.
Jack tried to stand and immediately regretted the decision as the world tilted sideways with nauseating intensity. His legs felt like they belonged to someone else, weak and unsteady beneath his weight.
"Easy," Priestess Lyanna said gently, her hand touching his shoulder with practiced care. "Divine communion leaves mortals disoriented. Your consciousness has traveled distances that normal minds cannot comprehend."
’No kidding,’ Jack thought grimly, fighting down a wave of nausea that threatened to empty his stomach across the sacred floor. ’I feel like I’ve been hit by a truck again.’
[SYSTEM ACTIVATION COMPLETE]
[MASSIVE DATA INTEGRATION IN PROGRESS]
[DRAVEN’S PENDANT - LEVEL 2 ACHIEVED]
[NOBLE SYSTEM EXPANSION UNLOCKED]
The familiar blue screens materialized before Jack’s eyes with unprecedented intensity, flooding his vision with information that made his already spinning head throb with additional confusion.
’Oh great,’ Jack thought sarcastically, ’because what I really needed right now was more overwhelming sensory input.’
[Your sarcasm is noted and filed under "Ungrateful User Responses." Would you prefer I remain silent while you stumble around like a drunk tavern patron?]
’Did you just... sass me? While I’m trying not to throw up on a sacred floor?’
[I prefer "providing contextual commentary on user behavior." And yes, you do look rather pathetic at the moment.]
Jack would have laughed if his head wasn’t splitting like someone was using it for hammer practice. Even in his disoriented state, the System’s attitude was somehow comforting in its familiar irreverence.
"Jack?" Sera’s voice sounded impatient. "Are you planning to commune with the floor, or can we continue our journey sometime today?"
"Give me a minute," Jack managed to say aloud, his voice hoarse and strained. "Divine communion apparently comes with side effects no one mentioned."
[ANALYZING USER STATUS...]
[PHYSICAL CONDITION: STABLE BUT DISORIENTED]
[MENTAL CONDITION: OVERWHELMED BUT FUNCTIONAL]
[DIVINE ESSENCE INTEGRATION: 97% COMPLETE]
[URGENT SYSTEM NOTIFICATION]
[Analayze has reached maximumproficiency.]
[Upgraded version available: Flawed Sight]
[COST: 250 Skill Points]
[Flawed Sight: Enhanced analysis. Allows you to see more information on powerful individuals.]
Jack blinked at the notification, his scattered thoughts slowly beginning to coalesce into something resembling coherent thought. His Analyze skill had maxed out?
’When did that happen?’
[When you were busy blabbering with Charolette like a school boy.]
’And Flawed Sight would be better than regular Analyze?’
[Significantly better. True Sight would allow you to see more details about certain creatures or people. Considering your tendency to stumble into dangerous situations, it might keep you alive longer.]
’Your confidence in my survival skills is overwhelming,’ Jack replied dryly, but he could see the logic. If gods and chosen ones were going to be targeting him, he needed every advantage he could get.
[NEXT SYSTEM NOTIFICATION]
[New Class Available.]
[Arc Mage.]
[Rank: Unique.]
[Note: this unique class is stronger than the previous class despite the same rank. Lightning is a tier stronger than before.]
[Unique Trait: Blue Lightning.]
[Requirements met.]
Jack’s interest sharpened despite his lingering disorientation.
’Blue lightning?’
That sounded considerably more impressive than whatever he’d been doing before.
’What’s the difference between regular lightning and blue lightning?’
[Lightning magic operates on a power hierarchy: Purple, Blue, Red, White. Each tier represents exponentially greater destructive potential and magical complexity.]
’And I can access blue lightning now?’
[With the Arc Mage class, yes. However, you must choose between Arc Mage and Lightning Apostle. The system will not allow dual-classing until higher levels are achieved.]
Jack remembered Lightning Apostle from his original class selection. He’d dismissed it at the time for being too religious-sounding, but maybe it deserved reconsideration.
’What exactly does Lightning Apostle do?’
[Lightning Apostle combines purifying magic with lightning affinity. While slightly less destructive than Arc Mage, it provides access to blessings, divine protection, and debuffs.]
That was tempting. His conversation with Draven had made it clear that divine politics were going to play a major role in his future. Having a class that enhanced that connection might be more valuable than raw destructive power.
But then again, Sera had just demonstrated the effectiveness of overwhelming violence in solving problems. Maybe raw destructive power was exactly what he needed.
’This is a tough choice,’ Jack thought, weighing his options carefully.
[Indeed. Choose poorly and you may find yourself inadequately prepared for future challenges. Choose wisely and you might actually survive to see your seventeenth birthday.]
’Your motivational speeches need work.’
[I prefer brutal honesty to false encouragement. It builds character.]
Before Jack could make his decision, another system notification flashed across his vision with unusual urgency.
